CDC Report Finds Sharp Rise in Dangerous Drug-Resistant Bacteria
-
CDC published a new report in the Annals of Internal Medicine on September 23rd, highlighting a dramatic increase in a dangerous type of drug-resistant bacteria called NDM-producing carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (NDM-CRE).
-
In 29 U.S. states that required reporting, cases of carbapenemase-producing CRE isolates increased from 2019 to 2023.
-
Virginia has seen a similar increase in NDM-CRE. In 2023, a clinician letter was sent alerting healthcare professionals of the increase.
-
VDH HAI/AR team updates case counts quarterly to keep healthcare providers informed about CRE epidemiology.
Call to Action: Improving Environmental Cleaning to Prevent Multidrug-Resistant Organism Transmission
-
VDH is calling on all healthcare facilities to strengthen environmental cleaning and disinfection practices to stop the spread of dangerous drug-resistant germs like Candida auris and carbapenemase-producing organisms (CPOs).
-
C. auris and CPOs have been reportable in Virginia since 2018 and have increased sharply since then.
-
In 2024, there were 368 cases of C. auris, and CPO cases rose by more than 50% compared to the year before.
-
Rising case counts highlight the need for strong infection prevention and control practices, effective environmental cleaning, and adequate staffing to protect patients and residents from drug-resistant threats.
-
Additional Information: Read the full memo to learn about the environmental cleaning best practices VDH recommends.
Multisociety Guidance for Infection Prevention and Control in Nursing Homes
-
A new multisociety guidance document is available to assist nursing homes in U.S. to define and implement their infection prevention and control (IPC) programs and practices. It updates the 2008 Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA)/Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC) guideline: Infection Prevention and Control in the Long-Term Care Facility.
-
Recommendations and implementation suggestions address IPC leadership, staffing, and resources, healthcare personnel and residents‘ adherence to precautions and effective hand hygiene, outbreak preparedness, training, occupational health, cleaning and disinfection in the care environment, and the involvement of IPC in the facility.

Celebrating International Infection Prevention Week: Standing UPPP Together
Governor Glenn Youngkin officially proclaimed October 19–25, 2025 as Infection Prevention Week in Virginia, recognizing the vital role of infection preventionists, healthcare professionals, and public health partners in safeguarding the health of communities across the Commonwealth. The proclamation underscores the importance of collaborative efforts to prevent infections in healthcare settings and beyond, and honors those working tirelessly to protect patients, residents, and staff.
During this year’s International Infection Prevention Week, the HAI/AR Program proudly highlighted how we embody the 2025 theme, Stand UPPP for Infection Prevention, call to collective action built on four key pillars: Unite, Protect, Prevent, and Prevail. Prevail.
-
Unite: Our weekly Cuppa Tea with an IP sessions create a relaxed space where infection preventionists from hospitals, long-term care, public health and more connect with VDH experts and peers to share questions, solutions, and ideas. In 2024, over 570 participants joined more than 2,000 times, fostering collaboration across the infection prevention community.
-
Protect: The Regional Infection Prevention Program supports healthcare facilities with no-cost onsite assessments, consultations, and training. In 2024, 199 assessments and over 200 consultation/education sessions helped facilities strengthen their infection prevention programs.
-
Prevent: The HAI/AR Resource Hub is Virginia’s go-to source for infection prevention tools, attracting over 70,000 views and 6,300 downloads in 2024. Redesigned for easy navigation, it empowers healthcare personnel with fast access to critical resources.
-
Prevail: In Virginia, cases of carbapenemase-producing organisms (CPOs) rose by over 50% from 2023 to 2024, while Candida auris increased from a single case in 2019 to 368 in 2024. To combat these emerging threats, the HAI/AR team collaborates with local health departments on investigations; in 2024 VDH partnered with 58 healthcare facilities to conduct 162 point prevalence surveys, testing over 4,000 swabs to support MDRO detection and containment efforts.
Together, by standing UPPP, we are building safer, healthier communities that are united, protected, and prepared to prevent and prevail against infections.

📢 National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN)
Upcoming CMS HAI Reporting Deadline
-
Data Submission: Hospitals must submit 2025 Q2 data into NHSN by November 17, 2025, including acute care hospitals, long-term acute care hospitals, inpatient rehabilitation facilities, and cancer hospitals.
-
Details: To ensure your data is entered correctly, please verify the following:
-
Ensure monthly reporting plans are complete.

Hospitals with conferred rights to VDH will receive a quality assurance report in November; please check your email and acknowledge receipt and review.
NHSN Hemovigilance Module
-
Enroll your facility in the NHSN Hemovigilance Module to support blood safety monitoring.
-
Starting in 2026, CDC will ask facilities to:
-
Document transfusion history when certain pathogens are identified. The updated module helps CDC quickly detect and track new pathogens spread by blood transfusions.
-
Report suspected transfusion-transmitted infections (TTIs) through the NHSN Biovigilance Component.
-
Reporting is optional and used only for public health purposes.
VDH HAI/AR Program Wants Your Feedback
-
The VDH HAI/AR Program is evaluating how our quarterly NHSN Cleaning Reports are being used by Virginia’s healthcare facilities.
-
These reports help facilities check data accuracy before CMS deadlines and the statewide annual report.
-
Your feedback matters—please complete a short survey (one response per facility).
