Virginia Immunization Information System

The new Virginia Immunization Information System (VIIS) launched June 24, 2025. 

VDH is working to streamline onboarding for vaccine ordering in the Vaccine Ordering Management System (VOMS). Transitioning to the VOMSwill be required by

December 31, 2025. More information on VOMS training will be coming soon.

COVID-19 Vaccine Available Now

COVID-19 vaccine is available from three vaccine manufacturers, Moderna (Spikevax), Sanofi (Nuvaxovid), and Pfizer/BioNTech (Comirnaty).  Providers can order now using VOMS, VERIP, or the updated order form.  Existing Vaccine Information Statements should be used until new ones are published by the CDC. All VFC providers are strongly recommended to carry COVID-19 vaccine to ensure access for VFC patients who may not have options to seek it elsewhere.

New Vaccines

Enflonsia-Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is now available through VFC for infants. Immunize.org updated the clinical content of Ask the Experts: RSV web page to reflect recent recommendation changes and the addition of clesrovimab (Enflonsia, Merck) as an RSV preventive antibody product option for infants.

Penmenvy is the second pentavalent meningococcal vaccine containing Neisseria meningitidis serogroups A, B, C, W, and Y (MenABCWY) to be licensed by the FDA. It is now available for children and adults. The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommends MenABCWY vaccination as an option when both MenACWY and MenB would be given on the same clinic day. Note: Men B vaccines are not interchangeable.

Providers can order these vaccines now using VOMS, VERIP or the updated order form.

Ecoflex Cooler Returns  

Ecoflex Coolers need to be returned to Cold Chain Technologies via UPS.  DO NOT call McKesson or UPS to schedule a pickup. A prepaid UPS return label is included on the inner flap of each EcoFlex cooler.  Give the box to any UPS driver or drop at a UPS drop box or facility as soon as possible. Due to their cost, the return of the cooler to Cold Chain Technologies is critical.

Adult & Child Immunization Schedules

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced approval of ACIP recommendations to apply individual-based decision-making to COVID-19 vaccination and recommend that toddlers receive protection from varicella (chickenpox) as a standalone immunization rather than in combination with measles, mumps, and rubella vaccination.

The immunization schedules will adopt the recent ACIP recommendations, approved by Acting Director of the CDC and Deputy Secretary of Health and Human Services Jim O’Neill. The CDC schedules will be updated on the CDC website by October 7, 2025.

New VFC Training Option

It is a VFC program requirement that both the primary AND backup coordinators complete annual training. CDC offers training modules and refresher test options that may fulfill these requirements for coordinators who didn’t participate in an annual VFC site visit.  Providers can complete VFC-related modules in the You Call the Shots course series.

*Continuing education (CE) credit is offered for each module. 

Experienced healthcare professionals familiar with VFC and federal storage and handling requirements can now opt to take a refresher test to demonstrate their knowledge, but no CE credits will be awarded for completing either refresher test.  Contact your VVFC consultant if you are interested in the refresher test options.

Holiday Preparations

Vaccine shipments from McKesson will be HELD: November 4th Election Day November 11th Veterans Day November 26-289 Thanksgiving December 22-January 1 Winter Holiday Season.  Orders entered by noon on December 10th should arrive before the break.   The Order Center will not enter direct-ship orders to avoid deliveries from Merck during these time periods. However, a few direct-shipments might arrive from Merck since they cannot be held as done with refrigerated vaccines shipped by McKesson. Providers should indicate any changes to routine hours when ordering and should order vaccine mindful of their holiday closures.

Adult Vaccine Update

Vaccines for Adults (VFA) Program

COVID-19 and mResvia vaccine are available through VFA.  As DOI includes new products in the VFA program it becomes more difficult to meet the demand for adult vaccines. Vaccines orders may not be filled as requested due to these funding constraints.  Please keep this in mind for planning purposes.
