Changes to Community Health Worker Program
Due to the termination of several federally funded COVID grants, BRHD's Community Health Worker (CHW) Program staff have been significantly reduced. We're devastated to lose such wonderful team members and are working hard to cover the ne This change will limit our participation in local events and reduce the number of clients seen for community health services. Please bear with us as we navigate this transition and reassess our community engagement strategy. For community health-related requests or referral needs, please contact our Community Engagement Specialist Willie Mae Gray at 434-270-3216 or WillieMae.Gray@vdh.virginia.gov.
Office of Vital Records Streamlines Newborn Birth Certificate Requests
Parents of newborns in Virginia can now request copies of their baby’s birth certificate from the comfort of the hospital room — or from home!
Prior to this change, parents completed paper forms in the hospital and paid by check or money order. Hospitals then forwarded the signed forms and payment to the Office of Vital Records (OVR). Now, families can pay the fee through a secure payment link sent by OVR. Additionally, VDH is now able to email payment links to customers and collect administration fees for all types of applications.

What does the health department do?
The Blue Ridge Health District (BRHD) promotes and protects health where you live, work, and play. We provide services in Albemarle, Charlottesville, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, and Nelson at our five local health departments and one community-based clinic.
How does BRHD create a healthy place to live?
BRHD connects people to resources, helping them make informed and healthy choices. Health department services include:
-
Disease Prevention – Reduce, control, and prevent illnesses that spread from person-to-person.
-
Environmental Health – Reduce food-borne illnesses by monitoring and permitting restaurants. Prevent disease by inspecting private wells and sewage disposal systems.
-
Health Clinic Services – Provide vaccines, STI testing and treatment, family planning services, TB testing, and WIC supplemental food program and nutrition education.
-
Vital Records – Issue birth, death, marriage, and divorce certificates.
-
Emergency Preparedness - Plan for and respond to large scale health events and disasters like severe weather and flu season. Manage Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) volunteers.
-
Harm Reduction – Supply free naloxone, medication disposal bags, and tobacco cessation services.
-
Population Health – Provide referrals to community resources through Community Health Workers. Provide timely public health information through multi-media channels.

We’ve wrapped up data gathering for the MAPP2Health Community Health Assessment!
Thanks to more than 1,100 residents across the District who shared their voices through interviews, surveys, and focus groups. Your input is helping shape a clearer picture of our community’s health!
We’re also grateful to our Steering Committee—12 dedicated representatives from local organizations and agencies—who have guided our Core Group: Blue Ridge Health District, Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital, and UVA Health.
Now it’s time to dig into the findings and start drafting the MAPP2Health report and the Community Health Improvement Plan. We’ll be sharing key takeaways throughout the summer, and the full report will be available by September 1.
