Confirmed Measles Cases at Dulles Airport
On March 5 and 14, 2025, multiple Maryland residents with confirmed measles traveled through Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) after returning from international travel. These cases are unrelated to measles outbreaks occurring in other parts of the US.
Providers should consider measles in patients with fever and a generalized maculopapular rash who have recently traveled out of the country or to regions of the US reporting measles outbreaks. Other symptoms include cough, coryza, or conjunctivitis.
If you suspect measles:
-
Notify: Immediately notify your local health department to ensure rapid testing and investigation. Your health department can help identify exposed contacts and provide recommendations.
-
Test: Submit a nasopharyngeal (NP) swab in VTM for PCR testing and a blood specimen for serology testing at Virginia’s state lab. Results are available in less than 24 hours.
Vaccination is the best protection against measles. Make sure patients are up to date on their measles vaccine, especially before international travel.

COVID-19 Disease Reporting Variance
On February 13, 2025, a variance to Virginia’s COVID-19 disease reporting and control regulations was implemented.
- Physicians, persons in charge of medical care facilities, and local health directors are no longer required to report individual cases of COVID-19.
- Directors of laboratories are still required to report all positive SARS-CoV-2 test results.
-
Suspected or confirmed outbreaks or clusters of cases should continue to be reported to the local health department immediately by all entities required to report.
More information on disease reporting in Virginia, including an FAQ about these changes, can be found on VDH’s Disease Reporting and Control Regulations webpage.
Meningococcal Disease Outbreak Conclusion
VDH investigated a statewide outbreak of meningococcal disease from June 2022 to February 2025. As of February 25, 2025, the outbreak has concluded, and meningococcal disease activity in Virginia has returned to pre-outbreak levels.
-
The Neisseria meningitidis strain associated with this outbreak continues to circulate in Virginia and nationally.
-
Keeping up to date with recommended vaccines is the best protection.
