Last week, the FDA proposed a rule to lower the amount of nicotine in cigarettes and other combusted tobacco products to minimally or nonaddictive. FDA Commissioner Robert M. Calliff, M.D. said, "This action, if finalized, could save many lives and dramatically reduce the burden of severe illness and disability, while also saving huge amounts of money. I hope we can all agree that significantly reducing the leading cause of preventable death and disease in the U.S. is an admirable goal we should all work toward.”
The new year is a great time for a fresh start, including quitting tobacco! View CDC's new feature article encouraging people to make their new year smokefree. This new Nicotine-Free Toolkit is another great resource. Quit Now Virginia (QNV) is a free resource to help you, a friend, a patient, or anyone to quit tobacco use.Â
📣 To learn more about QNV, reach out to our new Tobacco Use and Dependence Treatment Coordinator, Nicole Mayaen. We want to congratulate Nicole on this new role! Many of you know Nicole as the Eastern Regional Coordinator for the past 7 years. In her new role, she will coordinate cessation efforts, including collaborating with statewide and community-based partners to increase awareness and utilization of QNV and reduce the disproportionate impact on priority populations to achieve health equity.
