Global Technical Consultation Report on Proposed Terminology for Pathogens that Transmit Through the Air (4/18/2024)
- This report identified terminology that could be understood and accepted by different technical disciplines to help seek consensus with describing pathogens transmitted through the air that cause infections in humans.
- Consensus was reached on the term ‘infectious respiratory particles’ (IRPs), moving away from a strict separation of particle sizes, and accepting that smaller IRPs can be transmitted at both short and long-range depending on several influencing factors.
- The report outlined considerations for the use of the phrase ‘transmission through the air’ as an umbrella term to describe the transmission of IRPs through the air via airborne transmission or direct deposition (e.g., short distance particle transmission that are directly deposited in exposed mucous membranes of the face).
