New Resource! Virginia Infection Prevention & Control Training Alliance (VIPTA).
The Virginia Infection Prevention and Control Training Alliance (VIPTA) is a one-stop shop for infection prevention and control (IPC), HAI and AR resources. VIPTA aims to bring awareness to educational events and materials through monthly bulletins, calendars, and a resource library.
SHEA/IDSA/APIC Strategies to Prevent Healthcare-Associated Infections in Acute Care Hospitals: 2022 Updates.
The Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA) and other partners including the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) have updated their compendium of strategies to prevent HAIs. These concise recommendations provide practical guidance that includes “essential practices” that should be adopted by all acute care hospitals and “additional approaches” that can be considered for use. Wound Care Infection Prevention and Control Tool.
Do you currently have a good tool to observe infection prevention and control (IPC) practices during wound care? Need any refreshers about basic wound care IPC practices to make sure your policies and procedures are comprehensive? The new VDH wound care IPC tool is now online and helps healthcare facilities ensure wound care is done safely to reduce the risk of infection transmission.

News in Virginia
Influenza.
CDC recommends routine annual influenza vaccination for all persons aged ≥6 months who do not have contraindications. Vaccination should continue throughout the duration of influenza viruses season. CDC recommends the use of any licensed, age-appropriate flu vaccines including:

Injectable flu vaccines (flu shots) including high-dose quadrivalent vaccines, recombinant vaccines, and adjuvanted flu vaccines that can help create a stronger immune response.

A live attenuated influenza vaccine, which is given by nasal spray. All nasal spray flu vaccines for this season are quadrivalent, and approved for use in healthy non-pregnant people, 2 through 49 years old.

National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN)
Upcoming CMS HAI Reporting Deadline.
The deadline to enter 2023 Q2 data into NHSN under CMS Quality Reporting Programs for participating acute care hospitals, long-term acute care hospitals (LTACHs), inpatient rehabilitation facilities (IRFs), and cancer hospitals is November 15, 2023. To ensure your data has been correctly entered into NHSN, please verify that: 1) your monthly reporting plans are complete, 2) you have entered appropriate summary and event data or checked the appropriate no events boxes, and 3) you have cleared all alerts from your NHSN facility homepage.

Hospitals that have conferred rights to VDH will be receiving a quality assurance report in November; please be sure to check your email and acknowledge receipt and review.

CDC's Project Firstline.
New Project Firstline Resources: CDC Project Firstline created a variety of resources to promote infection control best practices during respiratory virus season, including a webpage and infographic that outline infection control actions, signs encouraging masking, and a one-pager explaining the risk of germs in the respiratory system.
Project Firstline has also released a new micro-learn training topic to help educate healthcare workers on What to Do When You See a Patient with a Draining Wound.
