In October We #WearPink
Yesterday marked the start of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), each year in the United States, about 240,000 cases of breast cancer are diagnosed in women and about 2,100 in men. This month is dedicated for raising awareness about breast cancer symptoms and prevention.
Risk factors for breast cancer are due to a combination of factors. There are risk factors like age and family history that you cannot change.
However, there are healthy choices you can make to help lower your risk of breast cancer:
- Keep a healthy weight and exercise regularly.
- Choose not to drink alcohol, or drink alcohol in moderation.
- If you are taking hormone replacement therapy or birth control pills, ask your doctor about the risks.
- Breastfeed your children, if possible.

What is Breast Screening?
Screening is a way to check a woman's breasts for cancer before there are symptoms or signs of disease. This is commonly done by taking an x-ray picture of the breast known as a mammogram. Finding cancer early can improve the chances that it can be treated successfully.
