New SEP for Pregnant Women
Effective March 1, 2025
Dear Agents,
Consistent with recent legislation that has passed, the Virginia Health Benefit Exchange has added Pregnancy to the list of Qualifying Life Events. This allows qualified pregnant women to be eligible for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) and enroll in coverage through Virginia’s Insurance Marketplace. Below are some important details:
- Virginia’s Insurance Marketplace is making this SEP available beginning March 1, 2025.
- This SEP is only available to new consumers who are not currently enrolled in health coverage. Consumers who are already enrolled in coverage will not have an SEP to change plans at this time.
- Attestation will be sufficient for verification of the QLE.
- Once a consumer comes to the Marketplace, attests to pregnancy, and submits their application, they will have 60 days to enroll in coverage.
- Coverage will be effective on the 1st of the month following the date of plan selection.
- Currently, consumers will need to call the Consumer Assistance Center to access this SEP. We will let you know when it is available on the platform.
