Leesburg, VA (June 18, 2026) – The Leesburg Police Department is alerting residents and businesses to a recent increase in reported check fraud incidents and is encouraging anyone who has recently mailed a check to monitor their bank accounts closely.
Investigators have received multiple reports involving checks that were mailed and later altered or fraudulently negotiated. In several cases, the intended payee information was changed before the check was deposited or cashed. Based on information developed during the investigation, detectives believe additional victims may exist and may be unaware that checks they mailed were altered or fraudulently negotiated.
The Leesburg Police Department is specifically encouraging anyone who recently mailed a check at the post office at 25 Catoctin Circle SE or by placing it in their residential mailbox for pickup to review their bank records and images of processed checks.
The Leesburg Police Department recommends the following: • Review recent check transactions and inspect images of cleared checks. • Confirm both the check amount and payee information are accurate. • Monitor bank accounts regularly for unauthorized activity. • Consider using electronic payment methods when available. • Report suspicious activity to your financial institution immediately.
Anyone who discovers a fraudulent or altered check should contact their financial institution and file a police report as soon as possible. Prompt reporting can assist investigators and may help prevent additional victims.
The Leesburg Police Department continues to cooperate with the United States Postal Service and the United States Postal Inspection Service as the investigation remains ongoing.
Anyone with information related to these incidents, or who believes they may have been the victim of check fraud, is encouraged to contact the Leesburg Police Department Criminal Investigations Division at 703-771-6417, by email at policeinvestigations@leesburgva.gov, or through the department's non-emergency line at 703-771-4500.
