Mayor Kelly Burk Encourages Residents to Participate in 9th Annual Water Challenge

During the month of August, residents can make water-saving pledges and enter to win eco-friendly prizes.

Leesburg, VA (July 16, 2020) – Leesburg Mayor Kelly Burk is once again joining mayors across the country in the annual Wyland National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation. The annual, non-profit, national community service campaign inspires leaders to engage their residents in making life-style changes that add up to big reductions in water and energy consumption.

Leesburg residents are being asked to make online pledges, beginning August 1, to conserve water, which can generate great impact on the health of our oceans, lakes, rivers, streams and wetlands. The challenge will run through August 31, 2020.

In the wake of the current pandemic, the campaign, normally held in April, will provide residents with more opportunities to get involved safely from home, including making water-friendly lifestyle changes, undertaking home-based environmental projects that add up to cleaner, safer communities, and sharing tips and strategies with friends and neighbors. Moreover, residents also learn about resources in their area to take their commitment of conservation even further, from regional water and energy resource issues, to cost-saving tips at home.

“Leesburg is a rapidly growing and dynamic community,” Burk said. “The National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation helps us draw attention to water supply planning and conservation efforts to ensure that our water supply is properly managed and preserved for future generations. Water is precious resource that cannot be taken for granted.”

Residents who participate will be eligible to win up to $3,000 towards home utilities in addition to more than $50,000 in prizes. One lucky charity will receive a 2020 Hylander Hybrid to serve its local community. To participate, visit www.mywaterpledge.com.
