Town of Leesburg Temporarily Waives Parking Requirements to Allow More Outdoor Dining

Leesburg restaurants can apply for temporary use permits to create outdoor dining areas in private parking lots.

Leesburg, VA (May 27, 2020) – At last night’s council meeting, the Leesburg Town Council approved a temporary  modification to the Leesburg Zoning Ordinance regarding parking requirements for restaurants. This measure is aimed at increasing opportunities for restaurants to create outdoor dining areas while social distancing restrictions remain in effect.

Under the modified regulations, restaurants may apply for a temporary use permit which, if approved, will be valid until resumption of indoor dining at full capacity is allowed by the governor’s office or until the town’s Continuity of Governance Order expires, whichever occurs first.

More information, including a list of frequently asked questions, how to apply for a temporary outdoor dining permit, and specific permit requirements, is available on the town website at www.leesburgva.gov/temporary-outdoor-dining. There is no fee for the permit. Town staff recommends that restaurants contact a staff member to discuss their applications before submitting to ensure a smooth approval process (703-737-7183 or permitting@leesburgva.gov).

Restaurants in the downtown may have outdoor dining areas on the public sidewalks if they are able to meet the physical distancing requirements for Phase 1 of the Forward Virginia plan (www.virginia.gov/coronavirus/forwardvirginia). A valid sidewalk dining permit from the town is required (www.leesburgva.gov/sidewalk-dining).
