Leesburg Council Meeting Offers Remote Public Comment Opportunity
Residents can comment during the petitioners’ section of the meeting by phone or video conference.
Leesburg, VA (April 22, 2020) – Beginning next week, members of the public can participate remotely in Leesburg Town Council meetings.
“Hearing from the public is one of the most important things that the Town Council does,” says Leesburg Mayor Kelly Burk. “At the beginning of every meeting, we set aside time on the agenda for members of the public to speak on any subject they wish. I am very pleased that starting with our meeting on April 28, we will have the technical capability for the public to make comments from the safety of their homes.”
Instructions for joining Town Council meetings remotely will be published on the Town Council meeting agendas, which are posted on the town website at www.leesburgva.gov/agendas and in the lobby of Town Hall by close of business on the Wednesdays preceding the meetings. During the petitioners’ section of each meeting, people who have joined the video conference or called into the meeting will be invited, one by one, to make their comments. Petitioners’ comments are limited to five minutes each.
Leesburg Town Council meetings are held on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of the month, beginning at 7 p.m. Meetings are broadcast live on the Town’s local government access cable channel (Xfinity Channel 67 and FiOS Channel 35) and streamed live on the town website (www.leesburgva.gov/webcasts). The Council Chamber will be open during the meetings for members of the public who wish to make their comments in person. No more than ten people, including council members and staff, will be allowed in the Council Chamber at any one time.
Public comments at Planning Commission and Board of Architectural Review meetings will be handled in the same manner, as will comments on Town Council public hearings. However, there are no public hearings scheduled for the Town Council until June.
