DC Central Kitchen stands out for its innovative, on-the-ground hunger relief efforts, particularly its Healthy Corners initiative, which utilizes urban corner stores as distribution points for healthy food. Healthy Corners is a classic example of leveraging existing infrastructure to address an ongoing problem. Since 2011, DC Central Kitchen has been equipping corner store owners with fresh produce and other healthy items, bringing healthy food to places where it was lacking and jumpstarting shopper demand. They source the produce from local farms, provide shelving and refrigerators for product display, and host educational events.

Key plant care strategies include removing diseased leaves, pruning for better air circulation, and mulching to protect the base of plants.

Each year, Friends of Trees recognizes those who show exceptional, outstanding, and innovative conservation-based actions meeting one or more important goals: to protect and preserve existing trees and associated habitats; to increase our tree canopy and related habitats; and/or to educate and inspire people to plant more trees and properly maintain them.
As vital components of our food system, trees support pollinators, contribute to soil health, provide shade for crops, and offer fruit, nuts, and other edible resources, all while fostering biodiversity. Consider nominating a project that recognizes the value and benefits of trees!
