Children’s books are a powerful tool, containing visual and verbal messages that heavily influence their ideas about themselves and others. Depending on the quality of the book, they can reinforce (or undermine) children’s affirmative self-concept, teach accurate (or misleading) information about people of various identities, and foster positive (or negative) attitudes about diversity. Consequently, selecting anti-bias literature to use with children is an important part of being an early childhood educator. This session will discuss important considerations for choosing inclusive books.

In this session, we will explore the importance of showing up authentically for the children we teach, recognizing that our whole selves—our emotions, experiences, and unique qualities—play a vital role in shaping our interactions and the environments we create. We will discuss the benefits of bringing our whole selves to our practice, not only for our growth as educators but also for the well-being of the children and families we support. Finally, we will share practical techniques for embracing this mindset in our classrooms and beyond.
