Volunteer to Teach Kids About Staying Safe
Are you available on weekdays during school hours? Do you enjoy working with kids? If so, this opportunity may be for you! The Department of Family Services’ Body Safety Program needs volunteer classroom instructors to help empower elementary students with the tools they need to prevent or interrupt child abuse. Three Nutrients to Reduce Inflammation
Inflammation is the body’s natural response to heal itself from infection or injuries. Chronic inflammation is long-lasting and associated with chronic conditions like heart disease and type 2 diabetes. The impact of diet on inflammation is still being studied. However, three nutrients may aid in reducing inflammation and managing chronic disease. The Advisory Social Services Board’s 2024 Annual Report
The Advisory Social Services Board (ASSB) has released its 2024 Annual Report on the services provided and outcomes achieved by the Fairfax County Department of Family Services. The ASSB report highlights the agency’s successes and underscores the vital role DFS has in delivering services that support the vulnerable in our community, often in collaboration with other agencies, community organizations, and residents committed to building a more equitable community. The ASSB wishes to thank the Board of Supervisors for its continued support of critical human services, and particularly those provided by DFS.

The Public Assistance and Employment Services team wants to partner with you to spread the word about our benefits and employment programs to more people in the community. PAES will come to your school, business, or nonprofit to share information and answer questions about programs like SNAP or Medicaid that help adults and families reach financial stability. How does violence impact a child’s development? On this episode of Unscripted, host Kendra Lee sits down with Brittany Vera, child witness to domestic violence coordinator, and Counseling Services Supervisor Kathryn Harlow—both with Domestic and Sexual Violence Services (DSVS)--to talk about how exposure to violence, whether directly or as a witness, can have far-reaching, negative consequences for children and how to disrupt the impact of trauma.

Monday, Mar. 10 – Dementia Friends Information Session – In-person
Dementia Friendly Fairfax envisions our community as a place where people living with dementia and their care partners will be able to engage in a variety of activities, be supported in the highest quality of life, and can live independently for as long as possible. Attend this session on March 10 from 11 a.m. -12:15 p.m. at Sherwood Regional Library, 2501 Sherwood Hall Ln, Alexandria, VA 22306. Register.

Tuesday, Mar. 11 – Virtual Parent Café: Social Media Panel for Teens and Parents
The next free Virtual Parent Café, Tuesday, March 11, 6:30 to 8 p.m. will feature a Social Media Panel for Teens and Parents. This panel of young adults will share their experiences navigating social media as teenagers. Panelists will discuss lessons learned about social media, the positive and negative impacts on their well-being, and what they thought their parents did well, or did not do well in monitoring their social media access. Fairfax County parents or guardians and their teens are welcome join us for this interactive online panel discussion through MS Teams.
