Major Mohammed Oluwa
Welcome to the year-end edition of the Reston District’s newsletter. It is hard to imagine 2024 coming to an end. However, as we look towards 2025, I hope we continue to reach more and more members in our community to not only grow our Community Advisory Committee (CAC) but to improve our engagement and partnership with the community. Additionally, I would like to welcome Captain Jonathan Weeks to the Reston District family, as he recently replaced Captain Richard Cash. Like Captain Cash, Captain Weeks brings a lot of knowledge that I know will be beneficial to making Reston the safest community in the County.
As we close out 2024, overall crime was on parity with 2023, with noticed decline in some of our crimes, such as, motor vehicle thefts and larcenies from motor vehicles. However, looking onward to 2025, I hold solace in the belief that we will see more decline in crime, due to the partnerships and engagement we have forged with our community at large this year. Our officers are eager and ecstatic to be serving the Reston community in the new year. The ASK for this holiday season is that we continue to be aware of our environment and to report any suspicious activity as soon as possible. The 9’0clock routine is something WE should all take to heart and practice this holiday season.
Finally, from our law enforcement, WE wish each and every one of you a happy holiday and a prosperous 2025!!
Hope to see you all at our CAC and other community events in 2025.

Captain Jonathan Weeks
As the new Assistant Commander of the Reston District Station, I will begin my 20th year with the Fairfax County Police Department next month. In my time with the department, I’ve had the opportunity to serve in Patrol, Neighborhood Patrol Unit, Northern Virginia Regional Gang Task Force, Gang Investigation Unit, Violent Crime Division, and the Special Investigations Division. It is an honor to have been afforded the chance to work and serve the community members of the Reston District. I look forward to working with the Reston officers to continue to make a significant, positive difference in our community.
Overall, crime continues to decline in Reston and Fairfax County. We should continue to be mindful of property crime spikes during the holiday season. These crimes can often be mitigated by keeping your vehicles locked or not leaving packages on your doorstep for an extended period. Our community has done a great job in assisting in combating crime and making Reston one of the safest districts in our County.
In closing, I encourage you to attend our monthly Citizen Advisory Committee (CAC) soon. These meetings are an excellent opportunity to meet the officers who serve you along with fellow community members who call Reston home.

Fairfax County, VA – The holiday season is a time for joy and generosity, but it’s also when scammers ramp up efforts to target unsuspecting individuals. FCPD is warning the community about common scams that spike during this festive time.
Holiday Scam #1: Impersonating Law Enforcement
During the holidays, scammers exploit the busy season by contacting victims, claiming to be police or government agents. They allege unpaid fines, missed jury duty, or legal issues and demand immediate payment via gift cards, cryptocurrency, or financial apps. They often use threats of arrest to pressure victims.
How to Stay Safe:
•Know the Truth: Police will never demand payment to resolve legal issues, especially through gift cards or financial apps.
•Verify Identity: If you receive a suspicious call, hang up and verify the caller’s identity by contacting FCPD’s non-emergency line at (703) 691-2131.
703-691-2131
•Take Your Time: Scammers rely on urgency. Pause, consult with trusted family or friends, and don’t rush into decisions.
Holiday Scam #2: Bank Impersonators
Fraudsters increase activity during the holidays, posing as banks and warning of account breaches or fraud alerts. They ask for sensitive details like account credentials or confirmation codes to access your funds. Some even use “spoofed” numbers to appear legitimate.
How to Stay Safe:
•Hang Up: Never respond to unsolicited calls or texts from unknown numbers. Verify concerns directly with your bank through official contact information.
•Protect Your Info: Don’t share personal or banking details over the phone unless you initiated the call.
•Be Skeptical: Banks will not ask for login information, confirmation codes, or remote access to your devices.
If you suspect a financial scam or have been a victim, report it to FCPD through the Financial Crimes Online Reporting (FiCOR) portal or call (703) 691-2131 for assistance.

Homelessness & Panhandling in Fairfax County:
If you come across someone panhandling, please remember that the Fairfax County Office to End Homelessness (OPEH) advises against giving them money. There are plenty of county resources available to help those in need. Instead, you can print out a resource handout to give them or donate to a nonprofit that supports people in need. There are also many volunteer opportunities to assist those in need or experiencing homelessness. Panhandling is protected under the First Amendment, so the police have limited options. However, we will respond if the person is committing a traffic or criminal act. For non-emergencies, you can contact the police at 703-691-2131, or call 9-1-1 in an emergency. For more information on homelessness or panhandling, please visit the OPEH site below.

Reston District Police Station Crime Report includes significant criminal incidents that occur in the designated time frame listed within the Reston District. Information contained in the FCPD RECAP is generally based on the initial reports made to the police department and does not include follow-up investigations, which may reveal different or additional information. Addresses shown indicate blocks or intersections within the district. This report is not a comprehensive list of every police event in Fairfax County in the stated time frame.
For a deeper look into our criminal/traffic statistics, please visit our new data portal at: www.fcpod.org
Larceny is a Crime of Opportunity
It only takes a moment for thieves to walk by to check your door handle, or to see valuables on the seat. Crews do target “quiet” neighborhoods where residents are less likely to be vigilant, but they also target shopping centers, gyms, and local parks day or night. Don’t be an easy target! Get into the habit of storing valuable items out of sight (before you get to your destination) and keeping your vehicle doors locked. Please, STOP leaving keys in your vehicles!
Keeping the community safe is a shared responsibility. We need to hear from you, if you see something suspicious! Do not confront the person, call the police immediately. For Emergencies or Crimes in Progress call: 9-1-1 & For Non-Emergency call: 703-691-2131.

Holiday Toy Drive
The Reston District Station proudly enjoyed collecting unwrapped gifts for our local children in need. The donations were collected from local churches, drop-offs at Reston District Station, and the "Stuff the Cruiser" hosted by Reston Town Center. The items were transported to the Cathy Hudgins Community Center where they were distributed. We brought bright smiles to many faces this holiday season. We appreciate the support of our community members!
