Climate Conversations: Inspire Action, Not Arguments
With the holiday season here, family gatherings are the perfect time to turn spirited debates into enlightening discussions. Climate change is a complex subject that brings up mixed feelings for many – fear, frustration, fatigue – which is why there is a whole professional field dedicated to communicating the science behind it and the solutions ahead. But it doesn’t have to be a taboo topic. Get tips and advice in the December Golden Gazette that will transform your climate conversations with family, friends and neighbors from a sensitive subject to an opportunity to inspire action.

On this episode of Unscripted, host Kendra Lee sits down with Abby Picard, prevention and education coordinator, and domestic and sexual violence counselor Kathryn Harlow—both with Domestic and Sexual Violence Services, to talk about what makes a healthy relationship.

Celebrating Families in Honor of Adoption Awareness Month
Thanks to community partners and sponsors who helped to make our Adoption Celebration possible! The Department of Family Services partnered with Fairfax County Circuit Court to host this event honoring families who have recently adopted children from Fairfax County Foster Care and Adoption. We appreciate the support of the Youth Alliance Limitless Engagement Foundation, the Magic Hand Orchestra, Trader Joe’s (the Reston, Fairfax, and Centreville locations), Wegman’s (Fairfax), Gabriella Hoeth of Inflate Décor, and Gaymon Studios for photography, the Northern Post-Adoption Consortium (NPAC) and Formed Families Forward. Fairfax County Teens Tackle Toxic Love
From love bombing to other toxic behaviors, teens can be victims of dating violence, too. Check out Blinding Love, a short film created by teens in Fairfax County’s Teen Advocates program. These advocates are young leaders committed to preventing dating violence in their communities. Tuesday & Wednesday, Feb. 4-26, 2025 – Sexual Violence Tier 1
Registration is now open for Sexual Violence Tier One, a 16-hour training on understanding sexual violence, systems responding to sexual violence in Fairfax County, and resources available in our community. This training is for professionals, volunteers, and community members looking to learn how and why sexual violence happens; the impact of sexual violence on individuals, families, and communities; and how to support those impacted. It is free, but registration is required. For more information, contact Abby Picard.
