More than 100 young people took part in a day of workforce development and career exploration activities at NCS' Discover Your Path Career Expo on Oct. 3, 2024.
The Discover Your Path Expo, held at Jim Scott Community Center in Fairfax, was an excellent opportunity for youth ages 14-24 to receive the tools and guidance necessary to navigate their professional journeys successfully. The workshops helped attendees with developing job search skills, making connections with an improved resume and building interview skills.
One of the expo's highlights was an interactive poverty simulation session to teach real-world budgeting skills. A poverty simulation is an eye-opening and fun experiential exercise that helps participants better understand the tough everyday choices it takes to survive when the arithmetic of life just doesn’t add up. More than 60 people participated in this enlightening exercise.

Fairfax County Holds Groundbreaking at OMVHS
NCS leaders, Mt. Vernon Supervisor Dan Storck and representatives from other Fairfax County agencies took part in a ceremonial groundbreaking for the renovation project at Original Mt. Vernon High School on Oct. 5, 2024.
The 85-year-old building, which houses South County Community Center, is undergoing a large renovation project that will result in state-of-the-art offerings for the Route 1 Corridor community.

Celebrating Digital Inclusion Week in Fairfax County
The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors declared Oct. 7-11, 2024, as Digital Inclusion Week in Fairfax County. As part of this effort, NCS is proud to announce expanded access to digital equipment and free Wi-Fi in the parking lots of 20 NCS facilities. These advances were made possible by the Bridging the Digital Divide project.

Fairfax County to Honor 'Champions of Character' October 21
Fairfax County youth athletes, coaches and parents will be honored at the Stephen A. McLaughlin Fairfax County Champions of Character Awards on Monday, Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. at the Fairfax County Government Center.
Instituted by the Fairfax County Athletic Council, this program aims to support the tradition of amateur athletics in cultivating teamwork, leadership, good sportsmanship and community service. See more information about the 2024 awards.

Hispanic Heritage Month: NCS Staffers Show Their Pride
NCS celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month Sept. 15-Oct. 15 with a number of vibrant celebrations at centers across the county. NCS to Take Part in National 'Lights On Afterschool' October 24
The Fairfax County Department of Neighborhood and Community Services is highlighting the importance of our after school programs by marking Lights On Afterschool on Oct. 24, 2024.
The Afterschool Alliance organizes the annual Lights On Afterschool, to draw attention to the many ways after school programs support students by offering them opportunities to learn new things – such as science, community service, robotics, Tae Kwon Do and poetry – and discover new skills. Stay Active from Anywhere with the Virtual Center for Active Adults
September was National Senior Centers Month. Check out this article in the Fairfax County Golden Gazette highlighting the benefits of the Virtual Center for Active Adults (VCAA), which provides entertaining, engaging and educational programming that older adults can stream from wherever they are.
VCAA is a partnership program with many other nonprofits and area governments. Participants say they appreciate the convenience and keeping minds and bodies sharp with free, online learning. Read the Golden Gazette article.

Fairfax County Appoints Toni Zollicoffer Chief Equity Officer
Fairfax County has a new Chief Equity Officer. Toni Zollicoffer, a longtime county human services leader, is dedicated to improving outcomes for populations disproportionately affected in areas such as housing access, interpersonal violence and mental health.
Her work has also been instrumental in embedding racial and social justice into the county’s violence interruption and prevention strategies, ensuring equitable outcomes for all residents. She replaces Fairfax County's first CEO Karla Bruce, who retired in September. Read more.

Join the Tour de Mount Vernon on October 19
Join Mount Vernon District Supervisor Dan Storck for the 9th Annual Tour de Mount Vernon, Community Bike Ride on Saturday, Oct. 19, 2024, starting and ending at the Workhouse Arts Center in Lorton. NCS is a proud partner in this event.
The ride begins at 8:30 a.m.; the whole family is welcome. Riders have the option of a 40-mile, 20-mile, or youth three-mile route. For more information and to register.
