The Commander's Corner
Greetings,
As we approach the Halloween season, we want to take a moment to emphasize the critical importance of pedestrian safety during this festive time. Halloween brings excitement and joy, with children and families taking to the streets for trick-or-treating and community celebrations. However, it also presents unique challenges for everyone on our roads.
As the Commanders of McLean District Station, we urge all drivers to exercise caution and mindfulness while navigating our neighborhoods. Remember to slow down, especially in residential areas where foot traffic is likely to be heavy.
To parents and guardians, we encourage you to talk to your children about safety. Use bright costumes, carry flashlights, and always cross the street at designated crosswalks. Please remind children to stay alert and watch for vehicles.
As a community, let’s work together to ensure that Halloween remains a safe and enjoyable occasion for everyone. Our officers will be on patrol to promote safety, and we ask all residents to do their part.
Thank you for your attention and cooperation. We wish everyone a safe and Happy Halloween!
- Major Joanna Culkin / Captain Morris

Trick or Treating Safety Tips
-
Stay Visible: Use reflective tape on costumes and carry flashlights to ensure you can be seen by drivers.
-
Stick to Sidewalks: Always walk on sidewalks when available. If there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic.
-
Cross Safely: Look both ways before crossing the street and use crosswalks whenever possible.
-
Go in Groups: Trick-or-treat with friends or family members. There’s safety in numbers!
-
Plan Your Route: Stick to familiar neighborhoods and map out your route in advance.
-
Check Costumes: Ensure costumes are flame-resistant, fit well to avoid tripping, and do not obstruct vision.
-
Be Mindful of Pets: Keep an eye on your pets during trick-or-treating, as they may be startled by costumes or crowds.
-
Inspect Treats: Always check candy and treats before eating. Discard any that are unwrapped or appear suspicious.
-
Avoid Distractions: Stay off phones while walking and remain aware of your surroundings.
-
Set a Curfew: Establish a time to return home, so everyone knows when to expect you back.
Stay safe and enjoy your Halloween!
