The National Capital Region is seeing the crime of package thefts continue to occur, but FCPD has worked proactively to keep these types of crimes down in our county. These lower crime rates in our jurisdiction reflect the overall safety of our community and the effectiveness of preventive measures we've implemented. Our team continues to monitor package theft trends closely, and we remain committed to crime prevention through community partnerships and visible patrols. These efforts are helping us keep the rates. Although these numbers are positive, we like to remind our residents that package theft is still a crime of opportunity. It’s important for everyone to remain vigilant and take some simple steps to protect their deliveries.
• Install Security Cameras: Visible security cameras can deter thieves and help identify suspects.
• Request Signature on Delivery: Require a signature for packages to be delivered to ensure someone is there to receive them.
• Use Package Lockers: Consider using delivery lockers or secure locations for package drop-offs.
• Set Up Delivery Alerts: Sign up for delivery notifications via email or text to track when your package arrives.
• Arrange for In-Person Pick-Up: Use services like Amazon Hub or UPS Access Point to pick up packages directly from a local business.
• Install a Smart Doorbell: Video doorbells provide real-time monitoring and can capture footage of suspicious activity.
• Coordinate with Neighbors: Ask trusted neighbors to retrieve your package if you’re not home.
• Use Alternative Delivery Locations: Have packages delivered to your workplace or a friend’s house.
• Leave Specific Delivery Instructions: Provide instructions for placing packages in a hidden or less visible spot.
• Install Motion-Sensor Lighting: Bright lights can scare off potential thieves who try to approach your porch.
• Use Timed Deliveries: Schedule your delivery for a time when you know you’ll be home.
• Require Identification for Delivery: Some delivery services allow you to require ID for package receipt.
• Invest in Package Lockboxes: Secure lockboxes provide a protected place for packages to be left.
• Opt for "Hold for Pickup": Use delivery service options that allow you to hold the package at a nearby facility until you can retrieve it.
• Sign Up for Vacation Holds: Pause package deliveries when you’re away to avoid packages piling up.
• Advertise Security Systems: Place visible signs and decals indicating that your home is monitored by a security system.
• Check Delivery Times: Monitor when your packages usually arrive and plan to be home or make other arrangements during those times.
• Keep Porch Clear of Clutter: A clean and visible porch is less attractive to thieves who don’t want to risk being seen.
• Utilize Package Insurance: If available, insure your deliveries to cover the cost in case of theft.
• Report Theft Immediately: In case of a theft, report it to the police as soon as possible and contact the delivery company for next steps.
