The Fairfax Food Council has a few announcements to share.

The Virginia Tech Center for Food Systems and Community Transformation, Virginia State University’s (VSU) Small Farm Outreach Program, and partners are excited to announce the opening of applications for 2024-2025 mini-grants aimed at enhancing urban agriculture in Virginia. As a key component of the “Advancing Urban Agriculture and Sustainable Food Systems” Initiative, the goal of the mini-grant funding is to build the capacity of existing urban agriculture work in Virginia.

Application Opens: Monday, June 17, 2024
Application Closes: Monday, August 19, 2024 at 5:00 pm ET.
Virtual Information Session: Friday, July 26, 2024 from 9:00 am - 10:00 am ET.

Virginia’s Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (VSFMNP), also known as Farm Market Fresh, provides a one-time benefit of $50 in vouchers to approved participants. These vouchers can be spent at participating farmers markets to purchase fresh fruits, vegetables, and cut herbs from June through November 2024.

The Food Access & Literacy Work Group meeting on June 26th will be dedicated to a newly developed orientation to the Fairfax Food Council. It will be a great opportunity to learn more about how the Food Council is structured, ongoing projects within all Food Council work groups and task forces, and how to get connected. Even for those who have been active with the Food Council, this orientation is designed to “even the playing field” so all have the same foundation of information. It is also a good way to learn more about Council leadership and, for those who may be interested in a future leadership position, Co-Chair responsibilities. Join the Food Council on Wednesday, 6/26, at 10:30 am!
