It's official! The Fairfax Food Council has a brand-new Policy Task Force! Currently, they are in the beginning stages of establishing which policy issues to prioritize and pursue. So far, policy issues around these three topics have risen to the top:
- Food Access
- Agriculture/Food Production/Food Waste
- Institutional Procurement/Business/Labor
It's not too late to add to this list! If there is a county policy you would like to see changed or implemented, join the task force!

Thanks to grant funds from the Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth, the Fairfax Food Council is launching a School Composting Pilot Program! The purpose of this pilot is to help schools reduce food waste by teaching students how to repurpose trash-bound scraps. Five FCPS schools have applied and been selected to receive:
- 3 composting tumblers
- 3 pairs of gloves
- 25 lidded food scrap collection bins
- 5 large leaf bags
- 1 $75 Home Depot gift card
Plus, Compost Crew will serve as an educational resource for the schools. The Food Council is excited to start this program, as it strives to cultivate an appreciation for all aspects of the food system!

Earlier this year, the Community Voice Task Force hosted its first Community Conversation Roadshow event, and it was a huge success! This event provided food growers, makers, and recyclers the opportunity to:
LEARN about the Fairfax Food Council and how to get involved.
SHARE successes and challenges as representatives of the local food system.
ENGAGE with and learn from other local food growers, makers, and recyclers.
Connections were made, voices were heard, and the Community Voice Task Force can't wait to do it again! Planning for the next event is already underway!
