Stafford Drive Stream Restoration Begins
The Stafford Drive stream restoration project is ready to start. The Fairfax City Council awarded a construction contract to Meadville Land Services in November 2024. Construction will start in mid-February.
The Stafford Drive stream restoration project area will be closed to the public for the duration of construction, which will take approximately 12 months. The project will provide the following improvements to the site:
- Approximately 2,300 linear feet of the Accotink Creek North Fork will be restored, from Fair Woods Parkway to Cardinal Road Park. Eroded stream banks will be reshaped to be erosion resistant.
- The floodplain will be lowered so that it activates sooner and allows stormwater to spread across the stream corridor. A wider path for stormwater reduces stream velocities and reduces erosion.
- A robust landscaping plan will be implemented that includes 2,800 trees and tubelings, 6,600 shrubs, and 7,800 live stakes.
- Two inlet channels along Fair Woods Parkway that carry water to the stream will be reconstructed and made to be erosion resistant.
-
The project will provide minor improvements to the floodplain limits that affect the Mosby Woods Condominium community.
We appreciate your patience while we work to make these improvements to the site. The initial stages of the project will be more disruptive because of the equipment necessary to remove trees along the stream corridor. Once stream restoration begins, trucks will be traveling to and from the site via Fair Woods Parkway and Stafford Drive to deliver new materials and haul away sediment and debris.
