What’s spookier than Halloween? The staggering amount of waste generated by millions of discarded pumpkins! Every November, more than 1.3 billion pounds of pumpkins end up in landfills across the country, contributing to food waste and methane emissions.
Help reduce this frightful waste by composting your pumpkins, jack-o-lanterns, gourds, and other edible fall décor at the 24-hour City of Fairfax Composting Center, located next to the Community Gardens at Fairfax City Hall (10455 Armstrong St.).

How to Participate:
- Drop off pumpkins, painted pumpkins, jack-o-lanterns, and gourds anytime at the Composting Center.
- Remove any non-compostable materials like candles, foil, plastic, or lights before placing in the compost bin.
- All edible fall decorations are welcome!

Everyone is invited to join in this effort to keep food waste out of the landfill. It’s a simple way to reduce your environmental footprint and help our city stay green!
