Volunteers Needed to Plant Rescued Native Plants in Kutner Park
Join us in supporting Fairfax’s local ecosystem by planting rescued native plants in Kutner Park! Friends of Accotink Creek, the Fairfax City Environmental Forum, and community neighbors are coming together to provide a new home for native plants that were rescued from a construction site to preserve their critical role in our environment. By planting native species, we help maintain biodiversity, improve soil health, support pollinators, and create a resilient green space for all to enjoy.
When: Saturday, November 2 and Sunday, November 3, 2024, from 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM
Location: Kutner Park, 3901 Jermantown Road, Fairfax, VA 22030
What to Expect:
Over 1000 native plants, such as ferns and wildflowers, need to be planted before the freezing weather.
Many or most of the plants are in seasonal dormancy, so we will be working only with the roots.
Careful handling is required to avoid damaging the roots (some quite small) and being sure they are planted right side up.
Due to the ongoing drought the soil is dry, and in some places, hardened. Careful effort is required to be sure the soil is loosened at each planting hole to enable the plants to take root.
What to Bring:
Dress for outdoor work: sturdy shoes, long pants, and long sleeves.
Gloves and tools will be provided, but feel free to bring your own if preferred.
Every plant we save and replant is a step toward preserving Fairfax’s green spaces for future generations. For more information, reach out to contact@accotink.org or visit www.accotink.org.
We hope to see you there to make a meaningful impact in our community!
