Celebrate the Changing Seasons at Fall Festival, Oct. 9

On Saturday, Oct. 9, the 45^th Annual Fall Festival will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Old Town Fairfax. The Fall Festival is a family-friendly event, but please leave your pets at home.

University Drive, Main Street, and Sager Avenue will be lined with more than 400 vendors selling artwork, crafts, and gourmet food. Shop for clothes, dolls, needlework, floral arrangements, glass and ceramic creations, jewelry, and all kinds of artwork.

Live Music

Enjoy live music and performances on three different stages: the main stage sponsored by Fair City Mall, the Old Town Square stage sponsored by HB Home Services, and the children’s stage sponsored by Lidl. The Reflex (The Ultimate 80s Band) will close the event with a concert from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Old Town Square.

Lumberjack Show

The popular All American Lumberjack Show is back! Watch competitors throw axes, race across floating logs, and wield a variety of very sharp saws. Show times are 10:30 a.m., noon, and 3:30 p.m., with an interactive camp at 1:30 p.m.

Parking

Limited parking is available for the event. Free shuttles will be available from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at George Mason University’s Rappahannock parking garage and Fairfax High School.

Masks are strongly encouraged but not required. Please do your part to help stop the spread of COVID-19. Parking options and other event information is available online.

The City Council Reporter for the Oct. 5 work session includes linked videos, staff reports, and presentations. The mayor and council discussed the rental district, tax exemptions for solar equipment, and plastic bags.  View the Reporter.

Vote by Mail in the November Election

The General Election is Nov. 2 to elect the Virginia governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, and Virginia delegates; the City of Fairfax Commissioner of the Revenue; and City Treasurer. Sample ballots are available online and at the Office of Voter Registration and Elections.  The deadline to request a by-mail ballot is Friday Oct. 22. If you requested a by-mail ballot for the November election, you should receive it within 7 days of your request.

Take the Village Survey (55+)

Fairfax City is establishing a “village” to assist older residents aging at home. AARP found that village members experience reduced isolation, increased independence, and enhanced purpose of life. Fairfax Village in the City will build personal connections between neighbors, share useful information, and facilitate access to area resources. Residents aged 55 and older are encouraged to take the community survey to help determine what services the new village should provide.  Take the survey.

NEW Exhibit: The Long History of Virginia Canneries

The history of Virginia canneries is showcased in this traveling exhibition from The Blue Ridge Institute in Ferrum. The story is told by oral interviews with former cannery workers, production images, and displays of canning equipment and a myriad of labels for canned products. Plan your visit.

Arbor Day Event at Van Dyck Park, Oct. 23

Celebrate Fairfax City’s 34th year of participation in the Arbor Day Foundation's Tree City USA Program from 9 to 11 a.m. Oct. 23 at Van Dyck Park. We will be planting trees, providing educational materials, giving away a limited number of free tree saplings to plant at home, and demonstrating the proper tree planting techniques.

Take a Virtual Tour of the Wastewater Treatment Plant

Have you ever wondered what happens to used water after it leaves your home? The wastewater treatment plant in Lorton cleans water used for dishwashing, laundry, cooking, and bathrooms, and water used for industrial purposes. Once dirty water is treated to meet or surpass state and federal water quality standards, clean water is released into Pohick Creek. The science and engineering used in the treatment process is amazing!
