During National Financial Aid Awareness Month, it’s important to understand financial aid and scholarships for managing education costs. Financial aid includes grants, loans, and work-study programs, while scholarships are merit-based or need-based and don’t require repayment. Being informed helps families plan better.
Start with the FAFSA!
Filling out the FAFSA is your gateway to financial aid, including grants, loans, work-study, and scholarships. If federal aid isn’t an option, Virginia students can apply for state aid through the Virginia Alternative State Aid Application. View how to prepare for the FAFSA. The 2025-26 FAFSA will be available on or before December 1, 2024.
