Celebrating our military-connected students, families in PWCS
April is designated “Month of the Military Child” to show support for and thank military children for their strength and sacrifices. More than two million people in the United States serve in the nation’s military, and many have families and children who are also impacted through their service.
This week, schools across PWCS observed Military Child Spirit Week including the annual Purple Up! Day on Wednesday, April 21. We share highlights in this edition of The Scoop!

As a reminder, Prince William County Public Schools will recognize nominees for Teacher of the Year and Principal of the Year, as well as educators who received their National Board Certification at an all-virtual, prerecorded ceremony at 7 p.m. this Tuesday, April 27. The Outstanding Educators Ceremony is being held virtually this year as a result of the COVID-19 social gathering limit required by the state. Parents as Partners in Special Education: Building Bridges Between Home, School, and Community
The Parents as Partners conference, hosted by the Prince William County Public Schools Office of Special Education Parent Resource Center, is designed to empower parents of students, prekindergarten through 12th grade, to advocate for their child and navigate the Section 504 or special education process to ensure successful outcomes.
Join us throughout the month of May for live Zoom information sessions presented by the Parent Educational Advocacy Training Center (PEATC) and the Prince William County Public Schools Office of Special Education. The sessions will address how you can be an advocate for your child, talk with your child about bullying, and contribute to the Section 504 or IEP process.

PWCS to administer Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System
During the Spring of the 2020-21 school year, Prince William County Public Schools will be administering the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS) to a sample group of middle and high school students learning in person. The YRBSS is a tool designed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to monitor health-risk behaviors that contribute to leading causes of mortality, morbidity, and social problems among youth in the US.
The questionnaire focuses on six priority areas including unintentional injuries and violence, sexual behaviors, alcohol and other drug use, tobacco use, unhealthy dietary behavior, and inadequate physical activity.
If your student is selected to complete this survey, you will receive additional communication to include an electronic permission form. We must have parent/guardian permission to administer the survey during the school day.
To learn more about the YRBSS survey and how it will be administered, please visit the YRBSS Fact Sheet (PDF).

Share the love for our PWCS teachers
Join us May 3-7 in celebrating teachers across Prince William County Public Schools. Our educators have worked tirelessly this school year to keep our students engaged and learning.
Nothing means more to teachers than hearing from their students and families that they are making a difference. Send us your "shout outs" to teachers for a job well-done in picture or video form. We’ll share as many as we can on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter as well as in The Scoop! during Teacher Appreciation Week.
Option 1 - Record a video of your student or students thanking a teacher. Remember to turn camera to horizontal format for recording and include the teacher's name and the school. Keep videos to no more than 10 seconds in length.
Option 2 - Take a picture of your student holding up a sign thanking a specific teacher.
Click on the button below to submit your videos and pictures by Monday, May 3 at 5 p.m.
