School Board approves operating budget for FY21, Superintendent provides updates
During the May 20 School Board Meeting, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Steve Walts congratulated the more than 6,200 high school seniors who have already met their graduation requirements. He also shared an update for the community on the ongoing efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic, including information on the 2020 Summer School program, a three-part plan for the collection of materials from schools, and options being considered for the 2020-21 school year.

The Prince William County Public Schools 2020 Virtual Summer School Program and dates follow:
- Elementary and Middle School Summer Program: July 6–24, 2020 (15-day program for qualifying students)
- English Learner High School Academy: June 22-July 31, 2020
- Operation Graduation-Grad Academy (current seniors only): June 22-July 31, 2020

Special guest shares virtual learning activity with Woodbridge Middle School students
Virginia Secretary of Education Atif Qarni joined Woodbridge Middle School sixth-grade boys and their teacher Cathy McAuley for a virtual science experiment. The students are part of the same gender program at Woodbridge Middle.
To demonstrate surface tension and the cohesive properties of liquids, Qarni added droplets of three different liquids on pennies to see how many drops would bubble up before spilling off.

Prince William County Special Education PTA holds first Recognition Awards Ceremony
The Prince William County Special Education PTA (PWCSEPTA) is a non-profit organization that serves Prince William County, Manassas City and Manassas Park. The group's mission is to make every child’s potential a reality by engaging and empowering families and communities to advocate for all children.
PWCSEPTA will be holding its first awards ceremony at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 30, 2020, to recognize teachers, professionals, students and community members who have gone above and beyond to advocate for students with disabilities in our community. Nominees, including many PWCS teachers and administrators, are listed on the SEPTA website, and they will be announced during the ceremony together with award recipients in each category.
The event will take place via Zoom and is open to the public with prior registration.
PWCS elementary school teacher shares her virtual learning practices

Andrea McGroarty, second grade teacher at Rockledge Elementary School, uses several programs and applications to provide virtual learning opportunities to her students. She also uses social media in her efforts to share tips with other teachers and learn things from them as well.

Oh! Oh! It's Magic
Professional magician Jay Mattioli recently performed a live magic show on a video stream for Buckland Mills Elementary School students.
The show was interactive allowing students to converse with Mattioli and even help him perform some illusions. One student in the virtual audience even helped the magician remotely push a straw through the center of a quarter.
Mattioli has been performing for many years and has appeared on both “America’s Got Talent” and “Showtime at the Apollo.”
The virtual magic show was presented by the Buckland Mills Elementary Parent-Teacher Organization as a year-end celebration.
