The Dunne Dispatch (School Renovation Survey) - October 27, 2026

Friends and Neighbors,

I would like to encourage you to complete the School Renovation Survey, which solicits your views on the physical condition of the schools attended by your children (or the schools in your community, if you do not have children enrolled in FCPS). This survey will determine the order in which schools are renovated, so your candid feedback is strongly encouraged. Please note that the survey closes on Saturday, October 31.

As a result of my advocacy, FCPS is conducting its first-ever Facilities Condition Assessment (FCA) of its school buildings. Through the FCA, FCPS will evaluate the physical condition and the functional performance of its buildings and infrastructure, which will provide FCPS with comprehensive data on every school building and facility for the first time. FCPS will use this data to determine which school renovations should be prioritized. FCPS will develop a renovation queue, which will be published in its annual Capital Improvement Program (CIP).

Fortunately, many schools in the Mount Vernon District were recently renovated: Belle View ES (2020), Bucknell ES (2017), Hollin Meadows ES (2018), Newington Forest ES (2018), Sandburg MS (2016), Silverbrook ES (2020), Stratford Landing ES (2018), Washington Mill ES (2022), Waynewood ES (2018), and Woodlawn ES (2015). However, some schools in the Mount Vernon District could benefit from a comprehensive renovation. Policy 8258 requires schools to be renovated on a 20- to 25-year cycle, but FCPS currently has a 45-year renovation cycle for its schools.

In addition to school renovations, FCPS must replace major equipment and capital infrastructure at shorter intervals to keep buildings functional, maintain a satisfactory learning environment, and avoid excessive maintenance and repair. Major equipment may need to be replaced up to four times between each renovation. For example, FCPS recently upgraded the playgrounds at Fort Hunt ES, Gunston ES, Lorton Station ES, Riverside ES, Silverbrook ES, and Woodley Hills ES. Stadium bathrooms were recently installed, turf fields were replaced, and stadium lighting was updated at Edison HS, Lewis HS, Hayfield SS, Mount Vernon HS, West Potomac HS, and South County HS. In addition, new roofs at Gunston ES and Whitman MS will be installed this summer.

Asset Useful Life and Renovation Cycle

I am focused on ensuring every student in the Mount Vernon District has a safe and inclusive learning environment in modern school buildings and facilities, so I will continue to advocate for measures that will accelerate infrastructure investments and renovations for schools attended by Mount Vernon District students.

Please do not hesitate to contact my office if we can support you and your family in any way. As a reminder, you are represented by four School Board Members, all of whom are dedicated to serving their constituents:

Very Respectfully,

Mateo Dunne
