Important Reminder: Dismissal Change Cut-Off Time (3:00 PM)

As we work together to ensure a smooth, safe, and efficient end to every school day, we want to share an important reminder regarding changes to your child’s dismissal routine.

To help our daily dismissal process run safely and seamlessly, all dismissal changes must be submitted before 3:00 PM each day.

Why is this policy in place?

After 3:00 PM, classrooms are wrapping up instruction, transitioning to the last specials of the day, packing up belongings, and then transitioning into afternoon dismissals. When changes are requested after 3:00 PM, delivering updated notes or messages to individual classrooms across the building becomes extremely difficult in the final minutes of the day.

Our primary concern is STUDENT SAFETY. When dismissal updates arrive late:

  • Teachers may not receive the message in time before students leave the classroom.

  • Students risk being dismissed via their regular routine (e.g., boarding a bus instead of going to Kiss & Ride or SACC).

  • It creates confusion and stress for students during an already busy time of day.

How you can help:

  • Plan Ahead: Please inform the main office or submit dismissal changes as early in the day as possible, and strictly before 3:00 PM.

  • Emergency Situations: We understand that unexpected emergencies occur. If a true emergency arises after 3:00 PM, please call the main office directly so our staff can assist you.

Thank you for your cooperation, understanding, and partnership in keeping our students safe and ensuring every child gets home safely every day!

🌸 Family Life Education (FLE): Virtual Parent Preview Meeting

You are invited to join us for our virtual Family Life Education (FLE) Parent Preview Meeting on Monday, October 26, at 7:00 PM. This meeting provides an opportunity to preview instructional media and lesson materials, as well as speak with school staff about the program.

About the FLE Program

Family Life Education (FLE) in grades K–6 promotes parental involvement, fosters positive self-concepts, and provides students with coping mechanisms for handling peer pressure and developmental changes:

  • Early Elementary (K–3): Focuses on the importance of families, distinguishing between good and bad touch, identifying trusted adults/sources of help, and building positive friendships.

  • Grades 4–6: Introduces Human Growth and Development (HGD), covering physical and emotional changes during puberty and prenatal development.

Reviewing Materials & Instruction Dates

  • Schoology: Lessons, slide presentations, and media are available to review anytime through Parent View in Schoology.

  • Detailed Descriptions: You can also view detailed grade-level program descriptions on the FCPS website.

  • Instruction Schedule: FLE instruction occurs at various times during the school year.

Opt-Out Information

Participation in FLE is voluntary. Parents/guardians may choose to opt their child out of any or all FLE lessons:

  • Submitting Opt-Outs: Forms are available electronically in the Parent Digital Consent (PDC) system.

  • Already Submitted? If you completed an opt-out form at the beginning of the school year, you do not need to resubmit.

  • Changing Your Selection: If you previously opted out but would now like your child to participate, please notify your child’s teacher in writing prior to instruction.

  • Alternative Instruction: An alternative, non-FLE health instructional program is provided for students who do not participate. We respect every family’s choices and ensure a supportive classroom environment for all students.

We look forward to working as your partner in supporting your child’s health and well-being!

Get Ready to Shine on Stage: Westbriar Music Shirts Now Available!

Attention Westbriar Band, Strings, and Chorus families! It’s time to gear up for an unforgettable year of musical performances. Westbriar Elementary has officially opened orders for this year’s official Westbriar Music Shirt.

As part of the Westbriar music program, all student musicians are expected to wear this shirt to ALL Band, Strings, and Choir performances throughout the school year.

  • Same Great Look: The shirt features the classic design from previous years and is identical across all ensembles. If your child already has a music shirt from a past season that still fits, you are all set!

  • Built for 4th–6th Graders: Because the design remains consistent year after year, families are encouraged to purchase a size that allows room to grow so students can wear it throughout their time in the music program.

  • Pricing & Sizing: Shirts are priced at $6.30 each and are available in sizes ranging from Youth Small to Adult XL.

  • How to Order: All orders must be placed online through MySchoolBucks.

Don't Miss the Deadline!

This will be the only opportunity to purchase a music shirt for the current school year. The final day to place your order on MySchoolBucks is Friday, November 13th.

📢 Action Required: The 2026 Federal Impact Aid Survey Is Now Available Online

The Federal Impact Aid program provides crucial grant funding to school districts that enroll federally connected students. Help FCPS secure its full portion of federal resources by helping us identify:

  • Military families

  • Federally connected families

  • Families living on military bases or federal property

Your participation ensures our schools receive the maximum funding and resources for which we are eligible. All responses and information are kept strictly confidential.

📋 Important Survey Guidelines

  • One Per Child: Please complete a separate survey form for each child enrolled in FCPS in your household.

  • Enrolling Parent: Only the parent/guardian who officially registered the student with FCPS (the "enrolling parent") can complete the Impact Aid Survey form.

  • Paper Copies: For families without access to SIS ParentVUE, paper survey forms will be sent home in student backpacks starting Wednesday, October 28.

FCPS Is Participating in Virginia Quality Birth to Five (VQB5)

Virginia Quality Birth to Five is Virginia’s system for measuring and supporting quality in early childhood programs so children enter kindergarten ready to learn. Help Your Child Become a Stronger Reader: Upcoming Family Learning Opportunities

Want to better understand how your child learns to read and how you can support them at home? FCPS is offering several free virtual sessions to help families learn about reading instruction, literacy resources, and strategies to build strong reading skills. Explore the opportunities below and register for the sessions that interest you.

Lexia Family Information Sessions

Want to learn more about Lexia® Core5 and Lexia® PowerUp? These virtual sessions share how FCPS is using both programs in classrooms across the division this school year to support students’ literacy growth and give families a chance to ask questions.

Every one-hour session covers the same content.

Share Your Thoughts on Schools and Buildings in the Renovation Queue Survey

Whether you work in an FCPS school, have a child enrolled, or live near an FCPS school, please share your perspective about building conditions, how facilities affect teaching and learning, renovation priorities, and what information would help you better understand this process.

Look for the survey in your email from Friday, October 16. The survey takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. Participation is voluntary, and all responses will be kept confidential. The survey will remain open until Saturday, October 31.

Did You Know? Bond Referendums Fund Facility Renovations

FCPS does not pay for facility renovations out of its general operating budget. Instead, Fairfax County voters decide on how much money FCPS can spend on capital improvement projects through bond referendums. Bonds are issued by the county to the school division and allow FCPS to renovate buildings without increasing taxes.

Learn more about bond referendums and how they support our schools on the Bond Referendum webpage.

Access to Your Child’s Grades & Assignments: Download the New ParentVUE App

New ParentVUE and StudentVUE mobile apps launched in July. Be sure to download the new app before winter break. After that time, you will need to use the new mobile app or a web browser to access ParentVUE or StudentVUE.

For instructions on installing the new apps and learning more about the updated login process, visit ParentVUE and StudentVUE mobile app resources. If you need assistance, please submit a Parent Support Request.

The Importance of the Flu Vaccination

The annual flu vaccine is the most effective way to protect your child from getting sick and to prevent the spread of illness within our classrooms. Staying up-to-date with your child's flu vaccination helps:

  • Reduce School Absences: Keeping students healthy means more time spent learning and engaging with peers.

  • Protect the Community: Vaccination helps shield vulnerable family members and neighbors from seasonal illness.

  • Support Overall Wellness: Routine flu shots are a key component of a proactive student health plan.

Upcoming Flu Shot Events

FCPS, in partnership with Inspire Health Alliance, will be providing flu shots for all FCPS students, ages 18 and under, with no out-of-pocket costs. Multiple events will be taking place at designated FCPS locations. Additional dates will be made available throughout the school year. Parents or guardians may view upcoming events and schedule an appointment for their student. Participation is voluntary.

Encouraging Regular Attendance

Regular attendance is a good habit to establish in childhood. It can lead to greater success in high school, college, and careers. Teachers and students miss your child when they can’t make it to school. If you or your family need support, please reach out to your school's front office. We are here for you!

If students miss too much school, school staff may reach out to the family to partner with them on addressing barriers to regular attendance. Visit the FCPS website for attendance resources.
