PTSA Student Food & Resource Pantry, The Wolf Shack: Halloween Candy Drive & Stuff the Van at the Bell Game!

The Wolf Shack is the PTSA-sponsored in-school food and resource pantry. In the Wolf Shack, we provide FREE essential resources for ALL Justice students - from food and fresh produce to personal toiletries to clothing to academic supplies to after-school snacks. Our Wolf Shack volunteers support over 1,000 student visits a month during weekly open hours on Wednesdays & Thursdays. The Wolf Shack can also be accessed anytime for emergent needs through teachers, social workers, family liaisons and counselors. The Wolf Shack is fully dependent upon the financial and in-kind donation support of our partners, families, staff and community. We have two upcoming opportunities for the community to support our students!

Leftover or Extra Halloween Candy Drive starting October 28th

One of the favorite things about the Wolf Shack for students is the candy bowl! A little sweet treat (often with a laugh or chat) means a lot to our student community. But we need help keeping that bowl full...and that's where you come in!

We are asking for extra or leftover candy from Halloween to be donated to the Wolf Shack. Starting October 30th, the PTSA will have Wolf Shack bins in the school front office to accept any and all candy donations. Whatever little goblins don't eat on Halloween night will be appreciated for weeks to come in the Wolf Shack! Want to drop your candy during non-school hours? No problem - just email wolfshack@justicehsptsa.org for alternative bin drop locations.

Justice-Falls Church Bell Game "Stuff the Van" Food & Toiletries Drive on November 6th!

On Friday November 6th, Justice High School hosts the annual, highly anticipated football "Bell Game" against Falls Church High School! Our larger community truly comes together for this much anticipated game every year.  This year the Wolf Shack will be holding a "Stuff the Van" food and toiletry drive before the game and through half time to stock the student resource pantry. Come join the community, enjoy the family-friendly rivalry and concessions, watch our award-winning marching band..and bring along food or toiletries to support our students! Even if you don't stay for the game, drop off donations and say hello. We will be in the parking lot near ticket sales and the entrance starting at 6pm - hope to see you!

Can't make game night, but want to donate? Please consider supporting The Wolf Shack in any of the following ways:

  • Make a financial donation which allows us to fill urgent needs (jhsptsa.org/wolfshackfund)
  • Become a Food for Neighbors Red Bag Donor to donate easily throughout the school year  (https://www.foodforneighbors.org/red-bag-program/)
  • Drop-off or have any donation delivered to the front office of JHS (just label with "PTSA Wolf Shack")
  • Purchase directly from our Amazon wish-list and deliver straight to the school (jhsptsa.org/wolfshackwishlist)
  • Organize a food and toiletry drive through your community, church, clubs and/or service organizations
  • Volunteer for our weekly open hours, packing the family food bags and/or for food distribution pick-ups and unloading  (jhsptsa.org/wolfshacksignup)

Email wolfshack@justicehsptsa.org with any questions or ideas. Thank you again for your support and generosity!

Share Your Thoughts on Schools and Buildings in the Renovation Queue Survey

Whether you work in an FCPS school, have a child enrolled, or live near an FCPS school, please share your perspective about building conditions, how facilities affect teaching and learning, renovation priorities, and what information would help you better understand this process.

Look for the survey in your email from Friday, October 16. The survey takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. Participation is voluntary, and all responses will be kept confidential. The survey will remain open until Saturday, October 31.

Did You Know? Bond Referendums Fund Facility Renovations

FCPS does not pay for facility renovations out of its general operating budget. Instead, Fairfax County voters decide on how much money FCPS can spend on capital improvement projects through bond referendums. Bonds are issued by the county to the school division and allow FCPS to renovate buildings without increasing taxes.

Learn more about bond referendums and how they support our schools on the Bond Referendum webpage.

Maintain Access to Your Child’s Grades and Assignments: Download the New ParentVUE App

New ParentVUE and StudentVUE mobile apps launched in July. Be sure to download the new app before winter break. After that time, you will need to use the new mobile app or a web browser to access ParentVUE or StudentVUE.

For instructions on installing the new apps and learning more about the updated login process, visit ParentVUE and StudentVUE mobile app resources. If you need assistance, please submit a Parent Support Request.

The Importance of the Flu Vaccination

The annual flu vaccine is the most effective way to protect your child from getting sick and to prevent the spread of illness within our classrooms. Staying up-to-date with your child's flu vaccination helps:

  • Reduce School Absences: Keeping students healthy means more time spent learning and engaging with peers.
  • Protect the Community: Vaccination helps shield vulnerable family members and neighbors from seasonal illness.
  • Support Overall Wellness: Routine flu shots are a key component of a proactive student health plan.

Upcoming Flu Shot Events

FCPS, in partnership with Inspire Health Alliance, will be providing flu shots for all FCPS students, ages 18 and under, with no out-of-pocket costs. Multiple events will be taking place at designated FCPS locations. Additional dates will be made available throughout the school year. Parents or guardians may view upcoming events and schedule an appointment for their student. Participation is voluntary.

Help Your Student Stay Focused and Engaged Without Digital Distractions

Please remind your student that personal electronic communication or computing devices should be off and personally stored (i.e., in backpacks) for the duration of the school day: bell to bell.

This includes personal laptops, tablets, smartwatches, smartphones, and similar devices. Students can only use FCPS-issued devices for school-related digital activities during the instructional day. There are exceptions for students with disabilities and those enrolled in specific courses.

If you need to reach your student during the school day, please call the school’s front office. Learn more about the FCPS cellphone policy and device policy.

October is Disability History and Awareness Month

In Virginia during October, Disability History and Awareness activities provide an opportunity to create greater public awareness for individuals with disabilities, with the goal of full inclusion in our community.

October is National Bullying Prevention Month

October is National Bullying Prevention Month. To help develop a common understanding of Bullying, below is the FCPS definition.

Bullying in Students Rights and Responsibilities is defined as: “Any aggressive and unwanted behavior that is intended to harm, intimidate, or humiliate the victim; involves a real or perceived power imbalance between the aggressor or aggressors and victim; and is repeated over time or causes severe emotional trauma. “Bullying” includes cyberbullying. “Bullying” does not include ordinary teasing, horseplay, argument, or peer conflict.”

For more information on how FCPS handles a bullying situation please visit the FCPS Bullying Prevention and Intervention webpage. Our goal is to ensure all students feel safe and welcome at school. If you have questions and/or concerns about something that is going on at school, please contact the front office so that they can support you and most importantly your student.

Keeping Children Safe Online

The Fairfax County Police Department shares these resources to help keep children safe online.

What Families Can Do to Fight Drug Misuse

FCPS is committed to raising awareness about the opioid epidemic with our educators, parents/caregivers, and students. Together, we can help ensure our students thrive.

What can families do?

  • Show you disapprove of underage drinking and other drug misuse. More than 80% of young people ages 10-18 say their parents are the leading influence on their decision whether to drink.
  • Show you care about your child’s health, wellness, and success.
  • Show you are a good source of information about alcohol and other drugs. Find helpful resources on the FCPS Opioid Awareness webpage.
  • Pay attention to your child and discourage risky behaviors.
  • Build your child’s skills and strategies for avoiding drinking and drug use. Talk with your child about what they would do if faced with a decision about alcohol and drugs, such as texting a code word to a family member or practicing how they will say, “No thanks.”

Get more information on opioid awareness.

Supporting Your Child’s Mental Health

Children go through a lot of changes, and it can be hard to tell if their behavior is developmentally appropriate or if they could benefit from mental health support. It’s important to talk to your child and pay attention to their actions, especially these warning signs:

  • Increased irritability, hyperactivity, energy, and/or aggressive behavior.
  • Excessive sadness, hopelessness, or worries.
  • Loss of appetite, or significant weight gain or loss.
  • Lack of sleep or too much sleep.
  • A decline in grades, school avoidance, or attendance concerns.
  • Alcohol or drug use.
  • Withdrawal from activities and/or friends and family.
  • Thoughts of harming themselves or others.

If you notice any of these warning signs or feel your child may be experiencing a mental health challenge, help is available. Please contact your child's school counselor to discuss your concerns and identify resources. Find additional ways to support your child’s wellness.

If you or someone you care about is experiencing a mental health crisis such as thoughts of harming themselves or others, please take action right away. Call 988, go to the nearest emergency room, or contact the Sharon Bulova Center for Community Health Emergency Services at 703-573-5679.
