Principal Message

Visiting classrooms and watching learning in action makes me so happy. Teachers work so hard behind the scenes to plan for instruction and our goal is always to engage each student deeply and provide the right level of challenge. It’s wonderful to visit classrooms, hear students’ collaborative conversations, watch their ideas take shape in projects, and see the pride on their faces as they share their work.

In this edition of our newsletter, we hope you will take time to nominate a staff member or two, that you would like to recognize for their contributions to the profession. Each member of our Chesterbrook family cares deeply about the work they do, has a heart for children and makes our team better. To be noticed and recognized that the work they do matters makes an incredible impact, so please consider taking the time to nominate an outstanding Chesterbrook staff member. I wanted to take a moment and share some information on screen time, as this a part of our work to be intentional in the balancing access for our students. I am proud of our work and the many wonderful things happening without screens across our classrooms. Teachers build in collaborative conversations, handwriting time, notetaking during lessons, writing on whiteboards to capture student thinking, essays being planned and drafted by hand and creative projects like first grade habitats and sixth grade Galactic games. Most importantly we stress to students time on computers is intentional and purposeful. It is quite nice to see how our students are adapting to strict focus on computers as an instructional tool. Does the computer still have a time and place - absolutely! We have provided professional development to 1st through 6th grade teachers to use ST Math to extend the math instruction for our students and help fill any foundational gaps that may be present.  We are using extensions beyond a student's regular math journey to ensure they are building a deep conceptual understanding of mathematics. Our access to online tools does not replace the work our teachers do each day with students and this limited time is instructional and purposeful.

We have a run of exciting community events with our Book Fair, Kickball Kickoff and Spirit week next week. Thank you to our PTA and parent volunteers for making these events happen. Can't wait to see you all soon at these events!

Sincerely,

Stacy Kirkpatrick, Principal
