Message from Mr. Greata

We certainly had a Spooktacular Homecoming last week! It was so much fun from the very first day of Spirit Week all the way to the final dance on Saturday night. Throughout the week, we marveled at how well everything was organized, how many students and staff participated, and how filled our halls were with school spirit. Of course, I shouldn’t be surprised with such an incredible Haunted HOCO! Huge congratulations as well to our Homecoming Royalty, Ryan Hembree and Abten Mahmoudpour!

Our Leadership students and Leadership classes did a fantastic job, and we are so proud of their hard work. I want to give a huge shoutout to the teachers and staff who helped organize such a great event—Dan Schaefer, Stephanie Graham, and Katie Cole-Kelly, Warren Williams, Brian Murphy, Will Cogan, Mike Ferraris—who were also supported tremendously by our teacher chaperones and parent volunteers. Thank you so very much!

We’re starting to gear up for district and regional tournaments, and over the past week we’ve had some great successes! Congratulations to our cheerleading team, who took 3rd place in their district competition, as well as our cross country teams, with the girls taking 3rd in the district and the boys taking 4th. A special congratulations to Isaac Schools, who took 1st place and Anne Przydzial who took 2nd place in their cross country races. We look forward to the regional competition this week.

At Carter G. Woodson High School, we believe our staff is truly exceptional, and the work they do for our students deserves to be celebrated beyond Woodson Nation! Each year, FCPS recognizes staff members who demonstrate outstanding excellence in their roles, including Outstanding Teacher, New Teacher, Professional Staff Leader, Educational Services Employee, Operational Services Employee, and Principal. We invite you to join us in honoring the incredible contributions made every day by highlighting some of our amazing staff members. Let’s shine a spotlight on the excellence that makes Carter G. Woodson HS special!

To nominate a Carter G. Woodson staff member, please complete the C.G. Woodson Outstanding Employee Nomination Form by Friday, November 13th.

This is the last week of the first quarter. Please check in with your student(s) to ensure they are turning in all outstanding work and have a plan for any upcoming tests or retests.

A couple of quick reminders: Friday, the 30th, will be a two-hour early release day for the end of the quarter, and there will be no school for students next Monday, November 2nd, and Tuesday, November 3rd.

Have a great week!

AP Testing Opt-Out Letters

2026-27 AP/IB Test Registration, Opt-Out Timeline, and Fees

As part of the FCPS Approved Budget, the fees for the first six AP/IB tests taken for courses in which students are enrolled for high school credit will be paid for by FCPS. Students taking AP tests without enrolling in the corresponding FCPS course are responsible for the test fee(s).

FCPS encourages all students to take AP tests for courses in which they are enrolled. However, students will have the opportunity to opt out of the test(s) by filling out an Opt Out form to be provided by the school during class this week. To assist in the decision-making process, students will be provided a report with their previous tests and current AP/IB course enrollment.

Regardless of FCPS opt out decision, students enrolled in any AP course must register for their associated AP test(s) in AP Classroom by October 30th. Instructions for this process have been provided by classroom teachers. Students who register after this date may incur a $40 late registration fee. Students who do not register by March 12th will not be able to take the exam(s) and applicable assessed exam fees will not be refunded.

AP students must make Opt Out decisions by October 30th by returning the form they receive to Student Services. Student accounts will be billed in December for tests that exceed the six FCPS-funded tests. The nonrefundable fees are $99 per AP exam.

Counselor Corner

We hosted a successful trip to GMU for the Alcanza College Fair. Counselors once again visited freshmen recently through their Social Studies classes to discuss a variety of resources: Naviance , a platform that allows students to take assessments for career exploration, research potential colleges, and view career videos of interest. Students may log service hours through Schoology on X2VOL.  Additionally, we reviewed helpful resources on the Woodson SS padlet, highlighting the Freshman padlet, College & Career Center padlet, Extracurriculars padlet, and Career Center Events padlet.

Seniors! If you receive an email from your intended college(s) that they have not received your transcript, check your common app to see the date submitted and if the college has downloaded it. Afterward, you will follow up with the college directly. You should not wait to submit your application. Your recommenders will send documents separately. As Quarter 1 comes to a close, please use the resources on the Academic Supports padlet. The course change period closed on 9/11/26, so students struggling in a class should speak directly with their teacher as a first step to learn supports and interventions for success.

Free and reduced

If your children qualify for Free and Reduced-Price Meals (FRM), they may also be eligible for:

  • Waive student course fees, reduced student parking pass, and waive senior fees.

  • Information about scholarships, classes, and services from non-FCPS agencies and organizations.

To receive these additional benefits, you must give written consent allowing FCPS staff to share your children's meal eligibility status with administrators, school counselors and the school's finance technician. This information will not be shared with any other parties.

The Consent to Share is available here in multiple languages. Copies are available in Student Services, as well.

Families who qualify for free or reduced-price school meals can receive breakfast and lunch at no cost for their children. This includes more than one-third of FCPS students. Families must complete the Free and Reduced-Price Meals (FRM) application before the start of each school year.

The application for FRM is now available for the 2026-27 school year. Students who were approved for FRM last year are eligible for the first 30 days of school this year (or until a new application is processed). Families should reapply as soon as possible so eligible children continue to receive meals at no cost.

Access the application and view criteria and up-to-date information on the FRM webpage. Families should reach out to their schools with questions or for assistance.
