It is time to recognize the incredible work of Justice High School employees! Nominations will be open from October 12-October 30 in the following categories: Outstanding Teacher (4+ years as a classroom teacher), Outstanding New Teacher (1-3 years as a classroom teacher), Outstanding New Principal (1-3 years as Justice Principal), Outstanding Professional Staff Leader, Outstanding Educational Services Employees, and Outstanding Operational Services Employees.
We are seeking nominations from staff members, students, parents, and community members. To nominate an Outstanding Justice High School Employee, please use this OUTSTANDING EMPLOYEE NOMINATION GOOGLE FORM.
Last year, a team at Justice began working on our application to be a Purple Star High School. Per VDOE, "The Virginia Purple Star Designation is awarded to military-friendly schools that have demonstrated a major commitment to students and families connected to our nation’s military. Schools that earn the award will receive a special Purple Star recognition to display on-site."
Last week, we learned that we have officially been recognized as a First Time Virginia Distinguished Purple Star School!
We are incredibly proud to be recognized for this honor, and we are more proud of the relationships we get to build with our military-connected families. Thanks to all who were involved in making this a reality!
The Wolf Shack Needs Volunteers for Red Bag Saturday on October 24th
Food for Neighbors is one of the Wolf Shack's biggest food and resource donors. Food for Neighbors has a Red Bag Donor program across area middle and high schools: Five times during the school year, you fill a Red Bag (dropped off at your door by Food for Neighbors) with food from a suggested grocery list. Drivers pick up the filled bag right from your front door and volunteers sort the food to distribute to local schools the same day! It is a simple and easy way to make sure the Wolf Shack stays stocked throughout the year.
OUR NEXT RED BAG SATURDAY OF THIS SCHOOL YEAR IS OCTOBER 24TH!
We NEED VOLUNTEERS to help unload and organize our food donations in the Wolf Shack. Adults and students welcome and service hours are offered to all student volunteers. Sign up to volunteer at jhsptsa.org/wolfshacksignup!
The Wolf Shack Wants Your Extra OR Leftover Halloween Candy!
One of the favorite things about the Wolf Shack for students is the candy bowl! A little sweet treat (often with a laugh or chat) means a lot to our student community. But we need help keeping that bowl full...and that's where you come in!
We are asking for extra candy from Halloween to be donated to the Wolf Shack. Starting October 30th, the PTSA will have Wolf Shack bins in the school front office to accept any and all candy donations. Whatever little goblins don't eat on Halloween night will be appreciated for weeks to come in the Wolf Shack!
The Wolf Shack is our PTSA-sponsored in-school food and resource pantry available to all Justice students. In the Wolf Shack, we provide FREE essential resources for ALL students - from food for them and their families to personal care toiletries to clothing to academic supplies to after-school snacks. The Wolf Shack is open from 3-5pm on late bus days (Wednesdays & Thursdays) every week in Room B27 between the Black Box Theater and the Little Theater. The Wolf Shack is fully dependent upon the financial and in-kind donation support of our partners, families, staff and community. Please consider supporting The Wolf Shack in any of the following ways:
- Make a financial donation which allows us to fill urgent needs (jhsptsa.org/wolfshackfund)
- Become a Food for Neighbors Red Bag Donor to donate easily throughout the school year (https://www.foodforneighbors.org/red-bag-program/)
- Drop-off or have any donation delivered to the front office of JHS (just label with "PTSA Wolf Shack")
- Purchase directly from our Amazon wish-list and deliver straight to the school (jhsptsa.org/wolfshackwishlist)
- Organize a food and toiletry drive through your community, church, clubs and/or service organizations
- Volunteer for our weekly open hours, packing the family food bags and/or for food distribution pick-ups and unloading (jhsptsa.org/wolfshacksignup)
Email wolfshack@justicehsptsa.org with any questions or ideas. Thank you again for your support and generosity!

FCPS Is Participating in Virginia Quality Birth to Five (VQB5)
Virginia Quality Birth to Five is Virginia’s system for measuring and supporting quality in early childhood programs so children enter kindergarten ready to learn. VQB5 builds on health and safety standards by measuring the quality of teacher-child interactions and the use of the curriculum. Visit the Virginia Quality Birth to Five website for more information.
Survey Extended! Share Your Feedback on Traveling to and From School
The FCPS Office of Safety and Security and Safe Routes to School program are asking families to share their experiences traveling to and from their child’s school. The feedback will help inform the Fairfax County School Board’s annual assessment of traffic and pedestrian safety near schools.
The Traffic and Pedestrian Safety Survey asks about walking and biking routes, traffic near schools, kiss-and-ride experiences, accessibility, and other safety concerns. Your feedback will help FCPS identify common issues. Your responses will be kept confidential and shared with school administrators and the Office of Safety and Security.
The survey takes about five minutes to complete and will be open through Tuesday, October 20.
Please note that parents may now submit more than one response to provide feedback regarding different schools. Be sure to identify the school related to your feedback and include specific locations where you have observed a safety issue. If you have students at different schools in FCPS, please complete a different survey for each school.
If you have any questions about the survey, please contact SafeRoutestoSchool@fcps.edu.
Share Your Thoughts on Schools and Buildings in the Renovation Queue Survey
The Office of the Chief of Facilities Services and Capital Programs is seeking input from community members, families, and employees about school facility needs and how FCPS prioritizes facility improvements.
Whether you work in an FCPS school, have a child enrolled, or live near an FCPS school, please share your perspective. The survey asks about building conditions, how facilities affect teaching and learning, renovation priorities, and what information would help you better understand this process.
Look for the survey in your email on Friday, October 16. The survey takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. Participation is voluntary, and all responses will be kept confidential. The survey will remain open until Saturday, October 31.
Did You Know? Bond Referendums Fund Facility Renovations
FCPS does not pay for facility renovations out of its general operating budget. Instead, Fairfax County voters decide on how much money FCPS can spend on capital improvement projects through bond referendums. Bonds are issued by the county to the school division and allow FCPS to renovate buildings without increasing taxes.
Learn more about bond referendums and how they support our schools on the Bond Referendum webpage.

October is National Bullying Prevention Month
October is National Bullying Prevention Month. To help develop a common understanding of Bullying, below is the FCPS definition.
Bullying in Students Rights and Responsibilities is defined as: “Any aggressive and unwanted behavior that is intended to harm, intimidate, or humiliate the victim; involves a real or perceived power imbalance between the aggressor or aggressors and victim; and is repeated over time or causes severe emotional trauma. “Bullying” includes cyberbullying. “Bullying” does not include ordinary teasing, horseplay, argument, or peer conflict.”
For more information on how FCPS handles a bullying situation please visit the FCPS Bullying Prevention and Intervention webpage. Our goal is to ensure all students feel safe and welcome at school. If you have questions and/or concerns about something that is going on at school, please contact the front office so that they can support you and most importantly your student.

Keeping Children Safe Online
The Fairfax County Police Department shares these resources to help keep children safe online.
What Families Can Do to Fight Drug Misuse
FCPS is committed to raising awareness about the opioid epidemic with our educators, parents/caregivers, and students. Together, we can help ensure our students thrive.
What can families do?
- Show you disapprove of underage drinking and other drug misuse. More than 80% of young people ages 10-18 say their parents are the leading influence on their decision whether to drink.
- Show you care about your child’s health, wellness, and success.
- Show you are a good source of information about alcohol and other drugs. Find helpful resources on the FCPS Opioid Awareness webpage.
- Pay attention to your child and discourage risky behaviors.
- Build your child’s skills and strategies for avoiding drinking and drug use. Talk with your child about what they would do if faced with a decision about alcohol and drugs, such as texting a code word to a family member or practicing how they will say, “No thanks.”
Get more information on opioid awareness.
Supporting Your Child’s Mental Health
Children go through a lot of changes, and it can be hard to tell if their behavior is developmentally appropriate or if they could benefit from mental health support. It’s important to talk to your child and pay attention to their actions, especially these warning signs:
- Increased irritability, hyperactivity, energy, and/or aggressive behavior.
- Excessive sadness, hopelessness, or worries.
- Loss of appetite, or significant weight gain or loss.
- Lack of sleep or too much sleep.
- A decline in grades, school avoidance, or attendance concerns.
- Alcohol or drug use.
- Withdrawal from activities and/or friends and family.
- Thoughts of harming themselves or others.
If you notice any of these warning signs or feel your child may be experiencing a mental health challenge, help is available. Please contact your child's school counselor to discuss your concerns and identify resources. Find additional ways to support your child’s wellness.
If you or someone you care about is experiencing a mental health crisis such as thoughts of harming themselves or others, please take action right away. Call 988, go to the nearest emergency room, or contact the Sharon Bulova Center for Community Health Emergency Services at 703-573-5679.
