The Clearview Community Connect

Stronger Together

Dear Clearview Families,

The end of October brings many family engagement opportunities, including parent-teacher conferences. All forms of engagement; such as, holding high academic expectations, communicating values about education, reading together, and attending events make a difference.

Family engagement is correlated with higher grades, better test scores, increased attendance, higher on-time graduation rates, and stronger post-secondary enrollment. In addition, family engagement positively influences non-academic outcomes, including student self-esteem, social-emotional skills, classroom behavior, and overall attitude toward learning. Please continue engaging with us.

Dr Gadsden

Have a wonderful week!

📅Calendar Reminders📅

Friday, October 30, is the last day of the first quarter, and a two-hour early release for students. Students do not have the option to remain at school (like they do on Early Release Wednesdays).Schools are closed for students on Monday, November 2, for a School Planning Day, and Tuesday, November 3, for a Teacher Workday.

FCPS Is Participating in Virginia Quality Birth to Five (VQB5)

Virginia Quality Birth to Five is Virginia’s system for measuring and supporting quality in early childhood programs so children enter kindergarten ready to learn. VQB5 builds on health and safety standards by measuring the quality of teacher-child interactions and the use of the curriculum. Visit the Virginia Quality Birth to Five website for more information and here for Clearview’s ratings.

🍂Outdoor Recess 🍂

With the crisp autumn air setting in, please remember to send your child to school with extra layers, including warm coats, hats, and gloves. We head outside for recess every day whenever weather permits, and we want to ensure our students stay warm and comfortable while playing.

🎉Herndon Homecoming Parade🎉

Get ready for the red carpet and join your Clearview friends in the Herndon Homecoming Parade on Saturday 10/24!  The Clearview 6th grade has been working hard on a float featuring the Hollywood Walk of Fame and you can be famous too!  There are many ways to participate!

  • Research a Hollywood Movie Star (from any time period) featured on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and create a costume to become or represent them!
  • Wear a costume of any movie character you like! (No weapons or scary faces, please)
  • Dress in dark colors and sunglasses to be a star’s bodyguard
  • Dress anyway you want and bring along a camera (real or your own cardboard creation!) to be part of the Paparazzi trying to get the “money shot!”
  • Wear your Clearview gear and come ready to wave and share our awesome Clearview spirit with the whole town!

This week, we will be provided a number where we will meet at Herndon Middle School around 9:00 AM on Saturday 10/24.  Each student must have a responsible adult with them throughout the event. The parade route is about 1 mile from HMS down Elden Street to the Herndon Caboose.  Reach out to Sara Murphy with questions sara@murphmail.org.

🎯Survey Extended!🎯

Share Your Feedback on Traveling to and From School

The FCPS Office of Safety and Security and Safe Routes to School program are asking families to share their experiences traveling to and from their child’s school. The feedback will help inform the Fairfax County School Board’s annual assessment of traffic and pedestrian safety near schools.

The Traffic and Pedestrian Safety Survey asks about walking and biking routes, traffic near schools, kiss-and-ride experiences, accessibility, and other safety concerns. Your feedback will help FCPS identify common issues. Your responses will be kept confidential and shared with school administrators and the Office of Safety and Security.

The survey takes about five minutes to complete and will be open through Tuesday, October 20.

Please note that parents may now submit more than one response to provide feedback regarding different schools. Be sure to identify the school related to your feedback and include specific locations where you have observed a safety issue. If you have students at different schools in FCPS, please complete a different survey for each school.

If you have any questions about the survey, please contact SafeRoutestoSchool@fcps.edu.

Disability History and Awareness Month

In 2009, the Virginia legislature declared every October as Disability History and Awareness Month. See the list of Designated Dates enacted by the Virginia General Assembly. October is also Learning Disabilities Awareness Month and National Disability Employment Awareness Month.

National Bullying Prevention Month

October is National Bullying Prevention Month. To help develop a common understanding of Bullying, below is the FCPS definition.

Bullying in Students Rights and Responsibilities is defined as: “Any aggressive and unwanted behavior that is intended to harm, intimidate, or humiliate the victim; involves a real or perceived power imbalance between the aggressor or aggressors and victim; and is repeated over time or causes severe emotional trauma. “Bullying” includes cyberbullying. “Bullying” does not include ordinary teasing, horseplay, argument, or peer conflict.”

For more information on how FCPS handles a bullying situation please visit the FCPS Bullying Prevention and Intervention webpage. Our goal is to ensure all students feel safe and welcome at school. If you have questions and/or concerns about something that is going on at school, please contact the front office so that they can support you and most importantly your child.

National School Bus Safety Week is October 19-23

National School Bus Safety Week is an important opportunity for parents, students, teachers, bus drivers, school staff, and community members to work together to promote school bus safety.

National Bus Safety Week

We encourage families to talk with their children about safe bus behavior, including remaining seated at all times, using an “inside voice,” and following the bus driver’s directions to help keep everyone safe. Together, we can ensure a safe and positive ride for all students!

Learn more about National School Bus Safety Week and explore additional school bus safety resources.
