October is Disability History and Awareness Month, a time to learn about and celebrate people with disabilities. This week, we’re highlighting sensory and communication disabilities, which can affect how a person sees, hears, speaks, or communicates with others. People may use supports such as Braille, American Sign Language, hearing devices, communication devices, or other assistive technology. By respecting different ways of experiencing and communicating with the world, we can help create a community where everyone feels included, understood, and valued.
For more information, explore FCPS Community Resources for Families of Students with Disabilities.
Staff Name: Morissa Lazar, Special Education Teacher
Ms. Lazar's journey to Special Education took a few unexpected turns, from corporate work and volunteering to law school and earning an MBA, before she found her calling in education. She later earned a master’s degree in Special Education and brings nearly a decade of experience working with students with exceptional needs, dual language learners, and refugee students prior to joining FCPS in the 2024–2025 school year. Patience, understanding, and meeting people where they are have always been important to her. Being a parent, especially to her son, who holds the most special place in her heart, makes these values even more meaningful. What she finds most rewarding is seeing her students independently demonstrate skills they have worked hard to master. She’s grateful that her journey has led her to Special Education and the Bailey’s Upper community.

October is Disability History and Awareness Month, a time to learn about and celebrate people with disabilities. This week, we’re highlighting non-apparent disabilities—disabilities that may not be immediately visible to others. These can include chronic health conditions, mental health disabilities, neurological conditions, and other disabilities that may affect a person’s daily life. By leading with kindness, avoiding assumptions, and respecting individual needs, we can help create a community where everyone feels supported, included, and valued.

FCPS is asking all families to fill out a Federal Impact Aid Survey. The form is available in SIS ParentVUE under Online Packets, which is in the upper right corner of the screen after logging in. Please complete it as soon as possible. Schools will provide paper forms to families who have not completed the survey in ParentVUE starting Wednesday, October 28.
Completing this form for each school-aged child in every household is how we ensure we receive all the resources available to us from the federal government. For more information, please visit the Federal Impact Aid Survey page.
Register for ParentVUE
Learn how to activate your SISParentVUE account so you can easily submit your survey and have access to other helpful information about your child.
Regular attendance is a good habit to establish in childhood. It can lead to greater success in high school, college, and careers. Teachers and students miss your child when they can’t make it to school. If you or your family need support, please reach out to your school's front office. We are here for you!
If students miss too much school, school staff may reach out to the family to partner with them on addressing barriers to regular attendance. Visit the FCPS website for attendance resources.
