Advanced Academics Program (AAP) Screening and Timeline Parent Meeting This Thursday, October 22, 6 p.m.

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) offers a continuum of advanced academic services for all students in kindergarten through 8th grade. Full-time Advanced Academic Program (AAP) services begin in 3rd grade.

Parents of 2nd through 6th graders who would like their child considered for full-time services for the 2027-2028 school year must submit a parent referral form no later than December 15 at 11:59 PM.

If you wish to submit a parent referral for your child, you do not need to wait until December 15 to do so. Referrals are being accepted now. Please email Linda Simon, our Advanced Academics Resource Teacher, at lesimon@fcps.edu to let her know you plan to submit a referral so she expects it.

Ms. Simon will host a parent information meeting this Thursday, October 22, at 6 p.m. in person in the Lane library for parents of students in grades 2 through 6 to explain the screening process, timeline, screening file components, and parent responsibilities for full-time AAP eligibility and placement.

Note: The December 15 deadline applies to all grade levels, including 6th graders screening for 7th grade even though middle school course selection does not take place until January/February 2027. If you want to have your child screened for services in middle school, please be sure to submit the referral by the December 15 deadline.

Fall Food Drive flyer with leaves and food items

Fall Food Drive Ends Tomorrow!

Thank you to the families who have already made a donation – in cash or in kind – to support our Fall Food Drive, sponsored by the Student Ambassadors. If you haven’t had a chance to donate yet, there’s still time! The food drive ends TOMORROW—Tuesday, October 20—but our drop boxes and Amazon Wishlist will remain active through Thursday, October 22.

Each grade level has been assigned one item to donate, but you can contribute as many of those items as you’d like. Here is the list:

  • Pre-K and Kindergarten: 1-lb. or 2-lb. bag of rice
  • 1st Grade: 1-lb. or 2-lb. bag of beans (any type)
  • 2nd Grade: Single-serving instant oatmeal packets (box of 6 to 12 or larger, any flavor)
  • 3rd Grade: Microwave popcorn bags (box of 6 to 12 or larger)
  • 4th Grade: Applesauce cups or squeeze pouches (box of 6 to 12 or larger)
  • 5th Grade: Granola/fruit bars (box of 8 to 16 or larger)
  • 6th Grade: Fruit snack pouches (box of 8 to 12 pouches or larger).

PLEASE NOTE:

  • Please purchase only the items listed.
  • Do not create smaller bags of bulk items (rice and beans) from larger bags.
  • All packaging must be original and sealed.

The competition between several grade levels for extra recess is tight, so please consider donating the item for your child’s grade. If you’d like to just make a cash donation to support our food drive and let us do the shopping, you can donate through the PTA website.

Thank you for supporting our Student Ambassadors and helping our local community! If you have questions, please contact our family liaison and Student Ambassadors sponsor, Melanie Crosby Hardy, at macrosby@fcps.edu.

Attention FCPS Families! The Federal Impact Aid Survey Now Available to Complete Online

The Federal Impact Aid program provides money to districts that enroll federally connected students. Help FCPS secure funding from the Impact Aid Program by helping us identify:

  • military families,
  • federally connected families,
  • families living on a military base.

Please complete one form for each child in your household. Remember that only the parent that registered the student with FCPS (the ‘enrolling parent’) can fill out the Impact Aid Survey form.

For families without access to ParentVUE, a paper copy of the form will be sent home with your student starting October 28. Your information will be kept strictly confidential.

Your support will ensure that we receive the resources for which we are eligible.

To access the Impact Aid Form from your computer or mobile device, we recommend using Google Chrome.

  • Step 1: CLICK HERE or type sisparent.fcps.edu into your Chrome address bar to be taken to SIS ParentVUE. If you don’t have a SIS ParentVUE account, contact your child’s school for an activation letter.
  • Step 2: After you’ve logged into your ParentVUE Account, look for the ‘Online Packets’ link at the top of the page. Click ‘Online Packets.’
  • Step 3: Next, click the ‘Federal Impact Aid Survey’ button on the bottom of the page. This will take you to the Impact Aid Survey for you to complete.

If you have multiple children in Fairfax County Public Schools, please fill out a form for each child. You will know you have completed all of the forms when you get to the final page, and see a green check next to each of their names.

Technical support for using ParentVUE or submitting the survey online is available by submitting a Parent Support Request ticket. Select SISParent in the Application dropdown menu and type “Federal Impact Aid Survey” in the Issue Description section. You may also call the Parent Technology Help Desk at 833-921-3277 (833-921-FCPS).

Veterans Day words surrounded by red white and blue stars

Honoring Our Lane Lion Veterans and Active Military Service Members for Veterans Day on Wednesday, November 11

We are honored to have so many military families – currently active and veteran – in our school community. If you or other family members are active-duty, reserve, or veteran service personnel, we would like to honor you by inviting you to visit our school on the morning of Veterans Day (Wednesday, November 11). There will be two events: a military family breakfast and classroom visits where family members can share their stories of service and sacrifice.

The family breakfast will be held before school in the cafeteria from 8:30 to 9:15 a.m. If your family would like to attend, please sign up here. Be sure to tell us how many in your family will attend with you (including you).

If you would like to visit classrooms on Veterans Day, please sign up using one of these methods:

  • Sign up online.
  • Fill out the paper form in this week’s Wednesday Folder and return it to our family liaison, Melanie Crosby Hardy, no later than Friday, November 6.
  • RSVP to Mrs. Crosby Hardy via email at macrosby@fcps.edu.

We will schedule you for two different classrooms, one of which will be that of the student to whom you are connected. This is to ensure that all classrooms have at least one visitor. Be sure to tell us which grade level is preferred for the second session. (If you are connected to more than one child at Lane, we will place you in those classrooms.) Classroom presentations will be about 15 to 20 minutes long.

A military family holding a flag

We need your photographs!

As part of our Veterans Day celebration, we would also like to create an electronic “Gallery of Honor” slide show featuring photographs of the active-duty and veteran members of the military in our school community. Please send a photo of your military family members by Wednesday, November 4, to be included.

You can send a hard-copy photo in to school with your child (please be sure to label it with your child’s name and teacher’s name) or e-mail a digital copy to our family liaison, Melanie Crosby Hardy, at macrosby@fcps.edu.

Please note: These photos will be included in a video that will be featured on our school news show. The video will be housed on YouTube; however, only people with the link will be able to view it. It will not be shared publicly. Please let us know if it is OK to include your family’s name with your photo in the slide show.

Thank you for participating in this very special event and thank you for your service! We hope to see you on November 11!

We’ll break down two key tests: VALLSS, which acts as an early warning system to catch reading strengths and weaknesses and pinpoint who needs extra support, and i-Ready, an adaptive assessment that tracks your child’s grade-level progress and personal growth all year long. Together, these tools look at the full picture of your child's reading—from sounding out words and building vocabulary to reading smoothly and actually understanding the story. You'll walk away knowing what those score reports really mean, how to chat about them with your child's teacher, and easy ways to boost their reading confidence right at home!

FCPS Is Participating in Virginia Quality Birth to Five (VQB5)

Virginia Quality Birth to Five is Virginia’s system for measuring and supporting quality in early childhood programs so children enter kindergarten ready to learn. VQB5 builds on health and safety standards by measuring the quality of teacher-child interactions and the use of the curriculum. Visit the Virginia Quality Birth to Five website for more information.

Share Your Thoughts on Schools and Buildings in the Renovation Queue Survey

The Office of the Chief of Facilities Services and Capital Programs is seeking input from community members, families, and employees about school facility needs and how FCPS prioritizes facility improvements.

Whether you work in an FCPS school, have a child enrolled, or live near an FCPS school, please share your perspective. The survey asks about building conditions, how facilities affect teaching and learning, renovation priorities, and what information would help you better understand this process.

Look for the survey in your email on Friday, October 16. The survey takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. Participation is voluntary, and all responses will be kept confidential. The survey will remain open until Saturday, October 31.

Did You Know? Bond Referendums Fund Facility Renovations

FCPS does not pay for facility renovations out of its general operating budget. Instead, Fairfax County voters decide on how much money FCPS can spend on capital improvement projects through bond referendums. Bonds are issued by the county to the school division and allow FCPS to renovate buildings without increasing taxes.

Learn more about bond referendums and how they support our schools on the Bond Referendum webpage.
