Principal's Message

It has been a fun Homecoming Week here in Bruin Nation, and I am looking forward to this afternoon's parade, followed by the dedication of our Bears and Bite of Braddock! Afterward, our award-winning Marching Band will perform pre-game tonight, saving halftime for our homecoming festivities. I hope to see many of you there celebrating our school spirit!

Looking ahead, it is also that time of year when we celebrate the incredible educators and operational staff who make Lake Braddock such a special place. Nominations are now open for the FCPS Outstanding Employee Awards!

Our staff works tirelessly every day to support, inspire, and care for our students. If there is a teacher, counselor, administrator, or operational team member who has made a meaningful impact on your child or family, I strongly encourage you to take a few minutes to nominate them. A short note of recognition from a family means the world to our staff. Please see additional submission information and deadline below.

Thank you for your ongoing support, and let's have a great Homecoming weekend.

Go Bruins!

Lindsey Kearns

All Hands on Deck! Join Us for Our Native Plant Garden Clean-Up Day – Nov 7

Dear School & Neighborhood Community,

Our school’s native plant garden is a wonderful outdoor learning space for our students, but it needs some serious love—and we need your help to bring it back to life!

We are hosting a massive Garden Clean-Up Day and extending a warm invitation to our families, neighbors, local community groups, youth organizations, and volunteer clubs to join forces with us.

Event Details:

  • Date: Saturday, November 7th
  • Rain Date: Sunday, November 8th (in case of heavy rain on Saturday)
  • Time: 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM (Drop in for an hour or stay for the day!)
  • Location: School Native Plant Garden
  • Contact: Ken Kuchta (kwkuchta@fcps.edu)

What We’ll Be Doing: We have a large area to tackle, focusing primarily on pulling weeds and spreading sheet mulch to prepare the garden for the seasons ahead.

What to Bring:

  • Work gloves and water bottles
  • Tools Needed: If you have shovels, pitchforks, or wheelbarrows you can bring along, please do! (Please make sure to label your equipment with your name).

Looking for Ongoing Garden Champions: Beyond November 7th, we are also looking for individuals or small groups who might be interested in committing to light, ongoing garden maintenance on a regular basis. If you love gardening, native ecology, or just spending time outdoors, we would adore your support throughout the year.

How to Sign Up: Whether you are coming solo, bringing your family, or organizing a team from your local club, please let us know you’re coming by replying to this message or contacting Ken Kuchta (kwkuchta@fcps.edu).

Thank you for helping us care for our environment and maintain a beautiful, thriving space for our students. We can't wait to see you there!

The application is now available. Applications must be started by 4 p.m. Wednesday, October 28, with a submission deadline of 4 p.m. Friday, October 30. Visit the TJHSST registration page for more information, including a schedule of upcoming information sessions at middle schools.

PTSA

Reflections is a National PTA multi-level arts program that brings students, families, and communities together through creativity.

Each year, students create original works of art in response to a student-created theme. Students can enter one or more arts categories and participate in the program division that best fits their grade level or support needs. Entries will be judged, and winners will be announced at our Reflections Art Show in December.

This year’s theme, “What My Culture Means to Me,” invites students to reflect on the traditions, experiences, stories, values, people, places, and communities that shape who they are. Students can share their unique perspectives and help others see the beauty and richness of different cultures.

Enter now through Nov. 13!

Reminders

Student Photos are Now Available / Make-up and Retake Information

Families should have received an email from Victor O'Neill Studios with their proofs. For any questions about school pictures, please contact: underclass@vosphoto.com.

Make-up and retake photos are scheduled for October 23 and students have been provided with a link to sign up for a timeslot. They will receive an email a day or two before then with their assigned time.

Victor O'Neill Studies has provided the following additional information:

  • No purchase is necessary to retake photos! If a package was purchased, students MUST return their original photo package to the photographer to receive a new package.
  • Any student may retake their photo for use in the Yearbook. Their new photo will automatically replace the original photo in the Yearbook.
  • IDs will NOT be reprinted with the retake photo. We will only reprint an ID if:
    • The student or staff member did not receive an ID at the original session.
    • There is missing or incorrect information on the ID. If a name or grade change is needed, a signed note from administration or a counselor is required.

Cell Phone Policy

Due to a new VA law passed earlier this year, FCPS has implemented a “bell-to-bell” phone-free policy across all grade levels. This means no cell phones, cell phone accessories, and smart devices (including AirPods, earbuds, headsets, and smart glasses) must be turned off and personally stored in a backpack or locker away by all students for the entire school day.

If you need to reach your student for any reason during the school day, please call their subschool and they will relay a message for you.
