Students in second grade have been learning about the life cycle of the butterfly. Part of this learning is experiencing the cycle by growing caterpillars in their classrooms. Now those cocoons are opening, and the monarch butterflies are being set free into our gardens!
Principal's Message
We recently received our annual school rating from Virginia’s new School Performance and Support Framework, and we have wonderful progress to celebrate! Thanks to the hard work of our students and staff, our overall school score jumped to 81.12 out of 100 this year.
We saw exciting improvements across the board, including:
-
Academic Growth: More students met or exceeded their individual learning goals.
-
Academic Mastery: Our students showed strong improvements, particularly in science and math.
-
School Readiness: We saw fantastic, consistent attendance from our students.
Because of this hard work, our overall score reached the “Meets Expectations” level! However, because we also qualify for extra federal resources to help specific student groups, our official state rating was adjusted to “Approaching Expectations.” We are thrilled to receive these additional resources, as they will help us provide even more targeted support to the students who need it.
Our students are so much more than a test score, and we are incredibly proud of the joy and learning happening in our classrooms every day. We will continue using small-group instruction and tailored support to help every Woodchuck thrive. Thank you for your continued trust and partnership!
Sincerely,
Felicia Usher
Principal

Share Your Feedback on Traveling to and From School
The FCPS Office of Safety and Security and Safe Routes to School program are asking families to share their experiences traveling to and from their child’s school. The feedback will help inform the Fairfax County School Board’s annual assessment of traffic and pedestrian safety near schools.
The Traffic and Pedestrian Safety Survey asks about walking and biking routes, traffic near schools, kiss-and-ride experiences, accessibility, and other safety concerns.
Your feedback will help FCPS identify common issues. Your responses will be kept confidential and shared with school administrators and the Office of Safety and Security. The five-minute survey is open through Thursday, October 15.
Be sure to identify the school related to your feedback and include specific locations where you have observed a safety issue. If you have students at different schools in FCPS, please complete a different survey for each school.
If you have any questions about the survey, please contact SafeRoutestoSchool@fcps.edu.
Celebrating the Power of School Lunches
Multiple studies show that school lunches are important in supporting overall student health by improving students’ diets and combating food insecurity. Students who eat school lunches consume more fruit, vegetables, and fiber than their peers.
This National School Lunch Week, FCPS Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) reminds families that they are dedicated to providing delicious, healthy, sustainable, and student-focused meals. New menu items have been launched this year based on student feedback.
