Happy Principal Appreciation Month, Mrs. Miller!

Thank you for your dedication, leadership, and the warm, supportive environment you create for students, staff and families every single day. We are so grateful for everything you do to make our school community a wonderful place to learn and grow.

Safety Reminder - ID Required

The safety and security of our students and staff is always our top priority. To ensure a safe environment for everyone, we want to remind all parents, guardians, and visitors of our front office check-in policy.

Please remember to bring a valid government-issued photo ID every time you come to Cub Run.

A photo ID is required for:

  • Student Pick-Up: Standard dismissal, early check-outs, or emergency pick-ups.
  • School Visits: Parent-teacher conferences, classroom visits, or school events during instructional hours.
  • Volunteering: Classroom help, event coordination, or chaperoning field trips.

When you arrive, our office team will verify your physical ID before issuing a visitor badge or releasing a student. Even if our staff recognizes you, this standard procedure ensures consistent safety for all children.

Thank you for your partnership, patience, and commitment to keeping our school community safe.

Early Release Wednesday - October 21

Cub Run’s first early release Wednesday is on October 21. To confirm or change how your child is being dismissed on October 21, 2026, please utilize this GOOGLE FORM by Friday, October 16.

Attendance Reminder

Cub Run families, we know life happens and sometimes your student needs to miss school. Please be sure to notify the main office when your student is absent. Only sending a message to your student’s teacher can lead to inaccurate attendance recording. Reporting attendance is easy as you can call the 24/7 attendance line at 703-633-7575, email cubrunelem.attendance@fcps.edu, or submit directly through ParentVUE. Please leave a specific message about why your student is not attending. Be sure to include symptoms if they are ill, especially if they have fever, nausea, vomiting, sore throat, and/or cough. Save, Share, and Remember!

Storybook Character Day - October 30

Mark your calendars! Storybook Character Day is coming on Friday, October 30, and we invite all students and staff to join the fun by dressing up as their favorite book character!

This is the perfect chance to read together at home and brainstorm a simple, homemade costume. Pull out those hats, props, and old clothes—no need to buy anything new!

For the safety and comfort of everyone, please ensure outfits are not scary. Masks, weapons, and dangerous-looking items are strictly prohibited.

Talk with your child about their character choice; sharing their story will be the best part of the day! We look forward to seeing our school filled with characters from countless stories!

National Bullying Prevention Month

October is National Bullying Prevention Month. To help develop a common understanding of Bullying, below is the FCPS definition.

Bullying in Students Rights and Responsibilities is defined as: “Any aggressive and unwanted behavior that is intended to harm, intimidate, or humiliate the victim; involves a real or perceived power imbalance between the aggressor or aggressors and victim; and is repeated over time or causes severe emotional trauma. “Bullying” includes cyberbullying. “Bullying” does not include ordinary teasing, horseplay, argument, or peer conflict.”

For more information on how FCPS handles a bullying situation please visit the FCPS Bullying Prevention and Intervention webpage. Our goal is to ensure all students feel safe and welcome at school. If you have questions and/or concerns about something that is going on at school, please contact the front office so that they can support you and most importantly your student.

Share Your Feedback on Traveling to and From School

The FCPS Office of Safety and Security and Safe Routes to School program are asking families to share their experiences traveling to and from their child’s school. The feedback will help inform the Fairfax County School Board’s annual assessment of traffic and pedestrian safety near schools.

The Traffic and Pedestrian Safety Survey asks about walking and biking routes, traffic near schools, kiss-and-ride experiences, accessibility, and other safety concerns.

Your feedback will help FCPS identify common issues. Your responses will be kept confidential and shared with school administrators and the Office of Safety and Security. The five-minute survey is open through Thursday, October 15.

Be sure to identify the school related to your feedback and include specific locations where you have observed a safety issue. If you have students at different schools in FCPS, please complete a different survey for each school.

If you have any questions about the survey, please contact SafeRoutestoSchool@fcps.edu.

Celebrating the Power of School Lunches

Multiple studies show that school lunches are important in supporting overall student health by improving students’ diets and combating food insecurity. Students who eat school lunches consume more fruit, vegetables, and fiber than their peers.

This National School Lunch Week, FCPS Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) reminds families that they are dedicated to providing delicious, healthy, sustainable, and student-focused meals. New menu items have been launched this year based on student feedback.

Want to know what’s for breakfast or lunch? View the Nutrition Services menus.

Fall Full-Time AAP Referral Window for Students New to FCPS Closes on October 15

The Advanced Academic Program (AAP) fall referral window is only for students in Grades 3 to 8 who are new to FCPS since January 1, 2026. Parents and guardians who would like their student to be considered for Full-Time AAP services must submit the Full-Time AAP Referral Form to Naomi Egerton Baker, AART, at nhegertonbak@fcps.edu by Thursday, October 15. Late referrals will not be accepted.

For students who are not new to FCPS, the spring Full-Time AAP identification window is open to students in Grades 2 to 7. Families interested in referring their student for consideration during the spring window must submit a referral by Tuesday, December 15.

Once a referral is received, our school will compile information related to the student. Then, a committee of trained professionals from across the county will review materials to determine eligibility for Full-Time AAP services.

Other Advanced Academic Services

At the elementary level, all students are screened each spring for Subject-Specific and Part-Time AAP services. Families may also refer their student for consideration for Subject-Specific or Part-Time AAP at any time during the school year. Eligibility decisions are made at the school level, and families are notified of the decision within 30 school days of the referral. The Full-Time AAP referral deadlines do not apply.

At the middle school level, honors courses are open to all students.

For more information, please contact Naomi Egerton Baker, AART, at nhegertonbak@fcps.edu  or visit the Advanced Academic Programs webpage.
