Dear Dranesville Families:
As October comes to a close, it is hard to believe that the first quarter of the school year will wrap up next week! Our students and staff have been busy in classrooms, on athletic fields, and throughout our school communities. Fall sports seasons are winding down, and our talented student musicians are taking the stage for fall concerts. I hope you have an opportunity to attend a performance or cheer on our student athletes. There is also much to celebrate across Dranesville, with numerous schools and students earning well deserved recognition for their accomplishments. Be sure to read about these impressive achievements below.
With the clocks changing this weekend and daylight arriving earlier but fading sooner in the afternoon, I also want to remind everyone to be especially attentive around our schools. Whether driving, walking, or biking, please use extra caution, particularly during afternoon dismissal and after school activities when visibility may be reduced.
I want to bring two important opportunities to your attention.
- FCPS is seeking community feedback through a survey about our school facilities and the renovation queue. Maintaining and improving our school buildings is essential to providing safe, welcoming, and effective learning environments. Your input can help inform conversations about facility needs and future renovation priorities.
- Additionally, applications are open for the School Board's Student Leadership Development Program, providing students with an opportunity to strengthen their leadership skills, learn more about the work of the School Board, and engage in meaningful discussions about public education. I encourage interested students to consider applying. You will find more information about both opportunities below.
As we move into November, I am grateful for the many ways our families and community members contribute to the success of our schools. From supporting student activities to sharing feedback on important division decisions, your involvement makes a difference. I remain committed to listening to your perspectives and advocating for the needs of our Dranesville schools and students. Please do not hesitate to contact me with questions, concerns, or ideas.
I wish you and your families an enjoyable fall season and a strong finish to the first quarter!
Regards,
Robyn

FCPS Updates
Share Your Thoughts on Schools and Buildings in the Renovation Queue Survey
Whether you work in an FCPS school, have a child enrolled, or live near an FCPS school, please share your perspective on school facility needs and how FCPS prioritizes facility improvements. The survey will close on Saturday, October 31.
FCPS parents and staff were emailed the survey on Friday, October 16. It takes approximately 15 minutes to complete, is voluntary, and all responses will be kept confidential. Community members can fill out this survey.
Did You Know? Bond Referendums Fund Facility Renovations
FCPS does not pay for facility renovations out of its general operating budget. Instead, Fairfax County voters decide on how much money FCPS can spend on capital improvement projects through bond referendums. Bonds are issued by the county to the school division and allow FCPS to renovate buildings without increasing taxes.
Learn more about bond referendums and how they support our schools on the Bond Referendum webpage.
All FCPS Schools Are Fully Accredited
All Fairfax County public schools are fully accredited, as announced by the Virginia Department of Education.
The majority (75%) of FCPS schools have been recognized as “distinguished” or “meets expectations” under Virginia’s School Performance and Support Framework. Statewide, just 70% of schools are recognized as “Distinguished” or “Meets Expectations.”
The proportion of FCPS schools designated as “Distinguished” increased to 56% in fall 2026 compared to 38% in fall 2025. Read more about the division’s ratings.

SafeWalkr from Hackathon to District Pilot
Three FCPS seniors are behind a pilot program, the SafeWalkr app, that aims to help students find the safest route to walk to school. The three friends realized existing online maps are prioritizing speed over safety, a flaw for students trying to get to school on their own. They also realized they had the skill set to do something about this issue. It will debut this week for families who live in the walking zones of 14 FCPS schools.
A pilot program launched on Wednesday, October 7, to coincide with National Walk and Roll to School Day. SafeWalkr will debut for families who reside in the walking zones at 14 FCPS schools, chosen based on the results of a Traffic and Pedestrian survey done during the 2025-2026 school year.
Here are Dranesville student schools involved in the pilot:
-
Elementary Schools: Chesterbrook, Lemon Road, and McNair

Closures will be implemented as needed for sidewalk and retaining wall construction work, and may occur from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays.
Drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians should use caution when traveling in this area. In the event of inclement weather or other delays, this work may be rescheduled or prolonged.
Pedestrian Safety Tips From FC Police
October is Pedestrian Safety Month, and the Fairfax County Police Department reminds drivers and pedestrians that everyone plays a role in keeping our roads safe.
Four in five pedestrian deaths happen after dark. As the days get shorter, more of us are walking and driving in low light. A few small habits can save a life:
- Walking? Wear something bright, add reflective gear, or carry a light.
- Driving? Slow down, keep your headlights on, and be prepared to stop at crosswalks.

Earthquake Preparedness- Learn to be Ready
History shows that earthquake preparedness should not be limited to California, Alaska, and other places commonly associated with seismic activity. People living in areas not known for earthquakes still need to know the dangers and how to prepare. People around the nation and the world participated in the 2026 Great ShakeOut on October 15th. The annual drill encourages individuals, organizations, and communities to practice earthquake preparedness.

Olympic Champions and FCPS Students Make a Splash- New Divisionwide Water Safety Initiative
From learning how to recognize water hazards to practicing lifesaving skills in the pool, FCPS students are discovering what it means to be a water-safety champion. And they have some Olympic champions to get them started. Through a new initiative, Water S.A.F.E. FCPS (Safe Aquatic Future and Education), the school division is working to equip students with the knowledge and skills to make safer choices in and around water.
The need is critical. According to the American Red Cross, drowning is the leading cause of accidental death among children ages 1 to 4 and the second-leading cause of unintentional injury death among children ages 5 to 14.
