Federal Impact Aid Survey
Beginning Monday October 19th, parents can log into their ParentVue accounts and complete the Federal Impact Aid Survey for each child. A completed form is required for every student whether they are federally impacted or not. The Impact Aid Program is a federal program designed to directly compensate local school districts that have been financially impacted by federal activities. The program’s mission is to reimburse local school districts for local revenues lost due to the presence of federally owned, and therefore tax exempt, property in Virginia ONLY.
Food 4 Thought program
The Marshall Road weekend food program, F4T, needs items to sustain our support for families throughout the school year. Each week, Marshall Road volunteers will pack nearly 60 weekend food packs to help support children experiencing food insecurity with healthy food for the weekend. If you can help students in our community with a donation, we would be most grateful. We do need clean plastic bags (grocery-sized only). Donations can be placed in the F4T bin in the lobby by students. Items can also be donated via the Walmart Registry and Amazon Wishlist. For other ways to donate contact Krista Davidson, school social worker at kmdavidson@fcps.edu or via telephone at 703-937-1556 or see the Marshall Road PTA website. We need a few additional volunteers to prepare the bags of food. Volunteers would be needed approximately once or twice a month Monday through Thursday for between 1 and 1½ hours before or during the school day. If you are interested in helping, please reach out to Erin Lebbin at erin.lebbin+F4T@gmail.com
Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screening
FCPS is committed to supporting all students’ mental wellness and social and emotional learning. FCPS approved a Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener that students use to share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop skills they need to succeed. These skills include achieving goals, understanding, and managing emotions, establishing, and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. Students also share how successful their school and community are at making them feel valued, included, and supported. These factors are critical to positive academic, social, and emotional success. All students in grades 3-12 have the opportunity to participate in the screener twice a year, in the fall and spring. Marshall Road ES has scheduled the administration of the fall SEL Screener for the week of October 19th-23rd. Opt-outs forms have been pushed out through The Parent Digital Consent System at the FCPS Opt-Out Page FCPS Opt-Out Page. Questions? Please reach out to Meg Gillespie at mmgillespie@fcps.edu or (703) 937-1558.

SEL Spotlight
Calming corners are spaces within the busy classroom where students utilize tools to self-regulate when they feel overwhelmed. Noise cancelling headphones, fidgets, breathing exercise cards, books, and coloring pages are some of the available tools. Time in calming corners is limited, typically to three to five minutes, with the goal of helping the student reset and return to learning. Did you know that calming corners can also be utilized at home? All you need is a cozy nook or corner of a bedroom to create a space for your child to process the stress of the day and navigate big feelings at home. Many of the same tools from school can be used at home with the addition of soothing music/sounds and a comfort item such as a favorite stuffed animal or blanket. At home, parents focus on co-regulation, time-ins, and connection. Whether at school, or home, calming corners help children learn self-regulation skills.
Madison Pyramid Parent Coffees
The Madison Pyramid Elementary School Counselors will be hosting a series of Parent Coffees to address common topics across the schools. The first of these series will be on November 13, 2026, titled Big Feelings, Bigger Support: Helping Parents Navigate Childhood Anxiety
When children experience anxiety, their feelings can sometimes seem overwhelming-for them and for the adults who love them. This practical and supportive session will help parents better understand childhood anxiety, recognize what may be happening beneath challenging behaviors, and learn strategies to respond with confidence and compassion. Participants will leave with a 1-page takeaway guide for immediate use at home. Led by experienced social workers (Catherine Campane, Christina Hunt and Traci Reno). This session will provide parents with tools to support emotional regulation, reduce anxiety, strengthen connection, and help children build confidence and coping skills-without dismissing or amplifying their worries.
When: November 13, 2026
Time: 9:30AM-10:30AM
Where: Flint Hill ES (Brain Lab)

FCPS Seeks Community Input on Middle School AAP Centers
FCPS is exploring a plan to offer Full-Time Advanced Academic Program (AAP) services at every middle school. Under the proposal, students who qualify could attend their neighborhood middle school and take advanced classes with other AAP students. The School Board has approved community engagement at Franklin, Hayfield, Holmes, Key, and Whitman middle schools, where programs could open for the 2027-28 school year. The proposal is still under consideration, and the School Board is expected to make a decision in December.
Each community meeting offers in-person and virtual participation. Upcoming meetings are scheduled for:
-
Holmes Middle: Thursday, October 15, at 6 p.m.
-
Whitman Middle: Thursday, October 22, at 6 p.m.
Current middle school students will remain at their assigned AAP centers through middle school. Learn more and find meeting sign-up forms on the Middle School AAP Centers page.
Safe Routes to School Parent and Caregiver Survey
As part of the Fairfax County School Board’s Annual School-Based Traffic and Pedestrian Safety Assessment, the FCPS Office of Safety and Security and Safe Routes to School program are inviting parents and caregivers to share their experiences traveling to and from school.
The Traffic and Pedestrian Safety Survey asks about walking and biking routes, traffic near schools, kiss and ride experiences, accessibility, and other safety concerns.
Your feedback will help FCPS identify common issues. Your responses will be kept confidential and shared with school administrators and the Office of Safety and Security. The five-minute survey is open through Thursday, October 15.
Be sure to identify the school related to your feedback and include specific locations where you have observed a safety issue. If you have students at different schools in FCPS, please complete a different survey for each school.
If you have any questions about the survey, please contact SafeRoutestoSchool@fcps.edu.
