Here's the answer to this week's joke: It swept in! đ§č
Dear Navy Families,
We have a few exciting school updates to share!
First, our filterless fish tank in the front foyer officially has fish! Itâs already a huge hit, and our Fish Club is taking great care of them every day. Make sure to take a look next time you visit the school.
Additionally, weâve made a couple of campus improvements: the tent near the trailers has been relocated to the picnic area by Door 3, and weâve added fresh mulch to the playground for student safety.
We hope those attending our military family night have fun connecting and enjoying an evening together.
We hope you have a fabulous weekend and that the rain stays away.
See you all next week!
Jason, Barbara, and Kim

During the month of October , the counselors will be teaching lessons on Responsibility. How to be Responsible at home, school, and in the community.  Parents: Some ways to instill responsibility in your children is to remind them to clean up after themselves at home; eat healthy foods, keep their hands to themselves, and review any school assignments they might have from their teachers.Â
During the month of October, the grade level homeroom teachers will also be teaching the research-based Second Step morning meeting lessons. These lessons can help students build social emotional skills that reduce classroom behavioral issues, improve academic focus, and support mental well-being. The counselors will be coordinating these lessons for the teachers. The first unit will cover the topic of Growth Mindset & Goal-Setting.  For more information on these lessons, please visit the site https://www.secondstep.org/ or contact your grade level counselors.  Ms. Fajardo (Kinder, 1st, 3rd & 5th) Ms. Giardina (Kinder, 2nd, 4th & 6th).Â
The FCPS SEL Team has partnered with the Family and School Partnerships Office to offer a Family CafĂ© Series titled, Growing Together: Talking about Social-Emotional Learning at Home. Families will have the opportunity to learn about the SEL Screener and how they can use their childâs results as a starting point for conversation and skill building. There is one session scheduled within each region; however, families can attend any session that is most convenient for them.Â

October 21, 3-Hour Early Release
To help our 3-hour early release dismissal run as smoothly and safely as possible, we kindly ask families to plan ahead for any changes to their childâs usual dismissal routine. Whether your child will be riding home with another family, joining a different Kiss and Ride pickup, or has another change in plans, please notify the main office by the Monday before the early release day. Early release days are especially busy, and receiving changes in advance gives our staff time to make sure every student gets home safely and as planned. Thank you for helping us make dismissal safe, organized, and smooth for everyone!

We are thrilled to share some exciting news with families in EA, Kindergarten, First, and Second grades. Max, the Therapy Dog. will begin visiting our lower grade classes beginning on October 28. Heâll be at Navy every Wednesday morning from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Â
Having a trained therapy dog at Navy is full of possibilities! He can work with students in small groups, read with children, or just visit!  The simple presence of a therapy dog at school can bring joy, provide non-judgmental support, and lower the stress level of children, which optimizes learning capacity. Max is certified by the Alliance of Therapy Dogs, is insured, and is up to date on all his vaccinations. Heâs a Havanese, weighs about six pounds and his tail never stops wagging! His handler/owner is a retired educator.
If Max is going to be visiting your childâs class, you will be notified by your childâs teacher. We just wanted to let you know that your child may occasionally see Max in the Navy hallways!Â

Lastly a big thank you to Ms. Fajardo, one of our school counselors, for being our special speaker this week and sharing with us all her roots from Colombia and Venezuela. We had such a fun time learning with her!

The FCPS Office of Safety and Security and Safe Routes to School program are asking families to share their experiences traveling to and from their childâs school. The feedback will help inform the Fairfax County School Boardâs annual assessment of traffic and pedestrian safety near schools.Â
The Traffic and Pedestrian Safety Survey asks about walking and biking routes, traffic near schools, kiss-and-ride experiences, accessibility, and other safety concerns.Â
Your feedback will help FCPS identify common issues. Your responses will be kept confidential and shared with school administrators and the Office of Safety and Security. The five-minute survey is open through Thursday, October 15.Â
Be sure to identify the school related to your feedback and include specific locations where you have observed a safety issue. If you have students at different schools in FCPS, please complete a different survey for each school.Â
If you have any questions about the survey, please contact SafeRoutestoSchool@fcps.edu.Â
Multiple studies show that school lunches are important in supporting overall student health by improving studentsâ diets and combating food insecurity. Students who eat school lunches consume more fruit, vegetables, and fiber than their peers.Â
This National School Lunch Week, FCPS Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) reminds families that they are dedicated to providing delicious, healthy, sustainable, and student-focused meals. New menu items have been launched this year based on student feedback.Â
Want to know whatâs for breakfast or lunch? View the Nutrition Services menus.
FCPS, in partnership with Inspire Health Alliance, will be providing school-required immunizations and optional flu shots for all FCPS students, ages 18 and under, with no out-of-pocket costs. Multiple events will take place at designated FCPS locations.Â
Additional dates will be made available throughout the school year. Parents or guardians may view upcoming events and schedule an appointment for their student. Participation is voluntary. Additional immunization resources are available.
