Irving students excited to be learning in class.

Irving students are excited to be recognized as "Distinguished"!

A Message from the Principal

Good afternoon, Irving Community,

We are excited and proud to share that Irving Middle School has been recognized as “Distinguished” under Virginia’s School Performance and Support Framework, earning an overall score of 93.32 based on last year’s outcomes! This recognition is a wonderful reflection of the hard work and growth of our students, the dedication of our educators, and the support of our families. While our students are so much more than test scores, this is an achievement worth celebrating. We’re grateful to our entire school community and look forward to continuing to help every student learn, grow, and thrive.

There will be no school for students tomorrow, Monday, October 12, in observance of Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

With appreciation,

Emily Cincinnati

Principal

More information, including the list of languages offered on the exam, and how to register is available online.

Library News

Most every seventh-grade English class is completing their first quarter book project at the end of this week.  The majority of students borrowed a library book to read for this.  We will be reminding them, but could use the help of parents to remind students to return their books to the library as soon as they’ve turned in their class project.

We are happy to report that we have seen an uptick in circulations.  Our students are keeping us and our parent volunteers busy returning things to the shelves!  If your student hasn’t made their way to the library, please encourage them to do so. We have a great collection of traditional books, but also online collections of ebooks and audiobooks for Irving students to enjoy!

Parent Education Session October 14, 6:30 PM -7:30 Irving Library

The Science of Growing Up: Supporting Emotional Development During the Teen Years

Are you looking to support your middle school child ? The WIMS PTA and Counselors are delighted to welcome Laura Waller, MS, LPC, NCC, ADHD-CCSP, to discuss our students' emotional development. Laura is a Nationally Certified Counselor and a Licensed Professional Counselor. Laura owns Connected Care Counseling in Springfield, VA. This is an in-person event. Please feel free to bring  friends that also have students in the Irving community, and we will have door prizes!

From around age ten through the teen years, the brain transforms in ways that shape how students think, feel, and connect. This session unpacks what’s happening beneath the surface—and why emotions can run high during this stage. By understanding these changes, parents can proactively build emotional literacy and support their teen's growing emotional awareness. Parents and caregivers will walk away from this program with practical tips and strategies to strengthen connection, communication, and confidence through the teen years.

Share Your Feedback on Traveling to and From School

The FCPS Office of Safety and Security and Safe Routes to School program are asking families to share their experiences traveling to and from their child’s school. The feedback will help inform the Fairfax County School Board’s annual assessment of traffic and pedestrian safety near schools.

The Traffic and Pedestrian Safety Survey asks about walking and biking routes, traffic near schools, kiss-and-ride experiences, accessibility, and other safety concerns.

Your feedback will help FCPS identify common issues. Your responses will be kept confidential and shared with school administrators and the Office of Safety and Security. The five-minute survey is open through Thursday, October 15.

Be sure to identify the school related to your feedback and include specific locations where you have observed a safety issue. If you have students at different schools in FCPS, please complete a different survey for each school.

If you have any questions about the survey, please contact SafeRoutestoSchool@fcps.edu.

A Quick Note to Our Irving Families: Building Something Great for Our Future Spartans! ⚔️

Hello Irving Families!

As our middle schoolers get closer to making the jump to West Springfield High School, those of us on the WSHS Athletic Booster Board are working hard behind the scenes to make sure the facilities waiting for them are top-tier.

Right now, we are in the middle of our Spartan Surge campaign to build Turf Field #2 at West Springfield. The project got a massive shot in the arm recently with a $250,000 grant from the Washington Commanders and NFL Foundation—and now we’re pushing hard to finish the drive before our kids step onto campus.

Having a second turf field means our future high school athletes, marching band members, and local youth sports teams won't have to deal with muddy grass, rain cancellations, or late-night 9 PM off-site practices.

🎙️ Know a Local Business Owner? Exclusive Press Box Naming Rights

We are officially opening up Exclusive Corporate Sponsorships & Press Box Naming Rights for local business owners, corporate partners, and regional leaders across Northern Virginia.

If you own a business, manage a company, or know an executive looking to make a lasting local impact, putting your brand on Field #2 will put you front and center before thousands of local families, visiting teams, and youth sports groups all year long.

🌯 How Irving Families Can Help Today

  • Explore Sponsorships & Naming Rights: Learn more or review corporate packages directly on our site:

  • Take the $30 Grassroots Challenge: Even a small $30 gift—roughly the cost of two burrito bowls—from middle school families helps pave the way for the facilities our kids will be using in just a year or two! You can chip in on our campaign page above or via GoFundMe.
  • Connect Us: If you or someone in your network might be interested in corporate sponsorship or press box naming rights, reach out directly to us at wshs.spartans.athletic.boosters@gmail.com.

Thank you for helping us leave West Springfield better than we found it for our kids!
