Policy on Toys and Fidgets

Note to Families: Policy on Toys and Fidgets at School

We kindly ask that students do not bring toys or fidgets from home to school, unless your child's classroom teacher has specifically notified you about a special class celebration.

While we understand these items are fun, bringing toys and personal fidgets to school can create significant disruptions to learning. Additionally, personal items risk being lost, misplaced, or broken.

Support for Fidgets as Learning Tools

If your child requires a fidget to assist with emotional regulation or concentration during the school day, please contact Ms. Crummett, School Counselor, at SLCrummett1@fcps.edu Ms. Crummett will work directly with your child to teach them how to use a fidget as an effective learning tool and will provide a school-appropriate fidget for them to use and keep at school.

Thank you for your cooperation and support in maintaining a focused and positive learning environment for all of our students!

FCPS will mark the beginning of Eid al-Fitr with an evening-only observance day on Monday, March 8. There will be school on this day, but major school-sponsored events and activities (such as auditions or tryouts) will not take place.

Tuesday, March 9, will be a holiday for students and staff.

Wednesday, March 10, will be an observance day. There will be school on this day, but certain activities that cannot be made up (major tests, field trips, or mandatory events) will not take place on this day.

A new school year calendar has been published, which includes this change. Please note that holidays and observances on the calendar may shift due to anticipated lunar sightings.

Share Your Feedback on Traveling to and From School

The FCPS Office of Safety and Security and Safe Routes to School program are asking families to share their experiences traveling to and from their child’s school. The feedback will help inform the Fairfax County School Board’s annual assessment of traffic and pedestrian safety near schools.

The Traffic and Pedestrian Safety Survey asks about walking and biking routes, traffic near schools, kiss-and-ride experiences, accessibility, and other safety concerns.

Your feedback will help FCPS identify common issues. Your responses will be kept confidential and shared with school administrators and the Office of Safety and Security. The five-minute survey is open through Thursday, October 15.

Be sure to identify the school related to your feedback and include specific locations where you have observed a safety issue. If you have students at different schools in FCPS, please complete a different survey for each school.

If you have any questions about the survey, please contact SafeRoutestoSchool@fcps.edu.

Franklin Sherman Food Bus is BACK - Make a REAL Difference!

Every Friday, leftover food from Franklin Sherman is gathered and taken across the street to the food pantry at SHARE. This weekly effort is an important source of food for local families who depend on SHARE, and one of their only sources of donated dairy products.

Would your family like to be part of it? Kids are encouraged to participate, making this a wonderful and very tangible way for them to see how a small amount of time can make a meaningful difference for another family.

The Food Bus runs every Friday that school is in session. Reach out to Lisa at lisagrochford@gmail.com for questions. We need families throughout the school year! You can sign up for a Friday here or choose several dates.

Volunteers

Volunteers are an important part of helping our students learn, grow, and succeed at Franklin Sherman and throughout FCPS! Parents, caregivers, and community members who would like to volunteer on field trips, in classrooms, at school events, or in other school activities must complete the FCPS volunteer registration process. This includes an online application, a training video, and, depending on the role, a background check.
