Message from Mr. Greata

Dear Woodson Families,

I hope you are all enjoying the long weekend and taking a moment to observe and celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day!

This past Wednesday, the Commonwealth of Virginia released its annual accreditation and school performance results under the Virginia School Performance and Support Framework. I am thrilled to announce that our school is Fully Accredited and has been officially designated as a Distinguished School in Virginia with an overall score of 97.7—a 2% increase over last year! Woodson’s report can be found here.

The Virginia Framework evaluates multiple key indicators of student success, including academic growth, attendance, English Learner progress, and college and career readiness through the "3 Es" (Enrollment, Enlistment, and Employment). This milestone is a direct reflection of the commitment and hard work of our outstanding students, staff, and families.

We are getting excited for Haunted HOCO next week which will be a Spooktacular Event. Check out the list below and get ready to show your school SPIRIT!

  • Monday: Lights Out — Wear all black!
  • Tuesday: Scream Team — Rep your favorite sports team jersey or gear!
  • Wednesday: Class Colors — Freshmen (Green), Sophomores (Purple), Juniors (White), Seniors (Red), Staff (Orange)

If your child wears glasses, please be sure that glasses are at school on screening day.

Counselor Corner

We hope students had fun at Hey Day and found a club to join. Please get connected and participate in a club, sports team, or activity. Locate the Woodson calendar from the home page (scroll down to see the week’s events). A great way to stay informed and connected is to follow us (or your favorite club/team) on insta: @woodsonhs, @cgwstudentsvcs, @woodsoncavathletcs. For logistics of senior year (portraits, graduation, etc) bookmark this page.

Counselors met with juniors as needed as a follow up to our Signs of Suicide prevention lesson. Students can continue to access supports through in-person school counseling and may utilize the Social/Emotional Supports padlet and the Woodson Wellness site.

Last week we hosted the PSAT for 10th and 11th grade students and the SAT for seniors who registered. Results can be accessed within students’ CollegeBoard accounts in December (students need to create an account) for the PSAT and within a couple of weeks for the SAT. Review the Testing padlet for more helpful info including how to read the score report, how to prepare for the SAT, and what is the difference between the SAT and ACT. Also find strategies for how to beat test anxiety.

With the end of the 1st quarter on the horizon (October 30th), students who need academic support should look at resources in our Academic Supports padlet.

National Merit Commended Scholars have been notified and should come to Student Services to collect their certificate. Congratulations!

Students interested in attending the Alcanza College Fair at GMU on Wednesday, 10/14 should return their completed application to Student Services tomorrow morning, 10/13.

For seniors who need help with college applications, counselors are hosting workshops during all lunches on the following dates in the Career Center: 10/9, 10/29 and 11/20. Remember that we offer Senior Support sessions every Wednesday before school from 7:45-8:05am. Thank you!

World Language Credit by Exam

The World Languages Credit by Exam (WLCBE) is an optional test for students in grades 7-12 who can speak and write (type) proficiently in a language other than English. Based on the results of the exam, students can earn 1, 2, and/or 3 world language credits. These credits are recorded on a transcript as Pass (P). No letter grade is assigned to any credits earned through the WLCBE.

The 2026 World Languages Credit by Exam will be administered at Woodson High School on Monday, November 16th during Returns at 9:45 AM in Cavalier Hall. It will last for both Return periods and conclude around 11:15AM.

Registration for the WLCBE is now open and closes on Friday, October 16, at 4 p.m. Late registrations will not be accepted.

To register your student for the exam, please turn in the Notification of Registration Opportunity WLCBE Form (available in eight different languages). Please print, complete, and sign the form and then have your student turn the form into their counselor in Student Services.

For additional information about the WLCBE, including a list of the languages offered on the exam and links to a practice test, please visit the FCPS WLCBE website.

If you have any questions, please reach out to your child’s school counselor.

AP Testing Opt-Out Letters

2026-27 AP/IB Test Registration, Opt-Out Timeline, and Fees

As part of the FCPS Approved Budget, the fees for the first six AP/IB tests taken for courses in which students are enrolled for high school credit will be paid for by FCPS. Students taking AP tests without enrolling in the corresponding FCPS course are responsible for the test fee(s).

FCPS encourages all students to take AP tests for courses in which they are enrolled. However, students will have the opportunity to opt out of the test(s) by filling out an Opt Out form to be provided by the school during class this week. To assist in the decision-making process, students will be provided a report with their previous tests and current AP/IB course enrollment.

Regardless of FCPS opt out decision, students enrolled in any AP course must register for their associated AP test(s) in AP Classroom by October 30th. Instructions for this process have been provided by classroom teachers. Students who register after this date may incur a $40 late registration fee. Students who do not register by March 12th will not be able to take the exam(s) and applicable assessed exam fees will not be refunded.

AP students must make Opt Out decisions by October 30th by returning the form they receive to Student Services. Student accounts will be billed in December for tests that exceed the six FCPS-funded tests. The nonrefundable fees are $99 per AP exam.

Free and reduced

If your children qualify for Free and Reduced-Price Meals (FRM), they may also be eligible for:

  • Waive student course fees, reduced student parking pass, and waive senior fees.

  • Information about scholarships, classes, and services from non-FCPS agencies and organizations.

To receive these additional benefits, you must give written consent allowing FCPS staff to share your children's meal eligibility status with administrators, school counselors and the school's finance technician. This information will not be shared with any other parties.

The Consent to Share is available here in multiple languages. Copies are available in Student Services, as well.

Families who qualify for free or reduced-price school meals can receive breakfast and lunch at no cost for their children. This includes more than one-third of FCPS students. Families must complete the Free and Reduced-Price Meals (FRM) application before the start of each school year.

The application for FRM is now available for the 2026-27 school year. Students who were approved for FRM last year are eligible for the first 30 days of school this year (or until a new application is processed). Families should reapply as soon as possible so eligible children continue to receive meals at no cost.

Access the application and view criteria and up-to-date information on the FRM webpage. Families should reach out to their schools with questions or for assistance.
