Dear Families,
October is off to a wonderful start at North Springfield ES! As we look ahead to the end of the first quarter later this month, our staff are actively analyzing beginning-of-year academic data to celebrate students’ strengths and plan instruction to maximize growth.
We are grateful for the energy and support our families bring to NSES! Thank you to everyone who joined us for the Top Ten Race last week. Your encouragement means so much to our students and we love celebrating achievements with you. We hope you’ll continue to take part in school activities and partner with us throughout the year.
Tomorrow, Wednesday, October 7, is Walk to School Day! We invite your child to walk to school and enjoy a healthy, active start to the day. We'll see you around the neighborhood tomorrow morning!
Additionally, We can’t wait to see you at Friday’s PTA Fun Run, beginning at 9:10 a.m. Thank you for being such enthusiastic partners in our students’ learning and school experience. We look forward to celebrating together!
Beaver Pride!

FCPS will mark the beginning of Eid al-Fitr with an evening-only observance day on Monday, March 8. There will be school on this day, but major school-sponsored events and activities (such as auditions or tryouts) will not take place.
Tuesday, March 9, will be a holiday for students and staff.
Wednesday, March 10, will be an observance day. There will be school on this day, but certain activities that cannot be made up (major tests, field trips, or mandatory events) will not take place on this day.
A new school year calendar has been published, which includes this change. Please note that holidays and observances on the calendar may shift due to anticipated lunar sightings.
The FCPS Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) booklet explains expectations for student behavior and adult responses to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment. This year’s SR&R includes new Universal Grade Matrices, which are at-a-glance charts that make it easier for families to see behavior expectations and school responses for grades K-3, 4-8, and 9-12.
Families, please review the SR&R and discuss these expectations with your child. Be sure to sign the SR&R acknowledgement form by Wednesday, September 30, either by logging into SIS ParentVUE or signing and returning the Signature Sheet to your child’s school.
Learn more by watching a short video about the SR&R (available in English and Spanish) or visiting the SR&R webpage.
Families are invited to attend the NSES AAP Information Meeting, led by Shana Twitchell, Advanced Academic Resource Teacher (AART) on October 14, 2026. We will be meeting in the library starting at 5:00pm.
Come learn about the continuum of available Advanced Academic Services and the referral/identification processes for Full-Time AAP services.
For more information, please contact Shana Twitchell, AART, at SRTwitchell@fcps.edu or visit the FCPS Advanced Academic Programs website.

As part of the Fairfax County School Board’s Annual School-Based Traffic and Pedestrian Safety Assessment, the FCPS Office of Safety and Security and Safe Routes to School program are inviting parents and caregivers to share their experiences traveling to and from school.
The Traffic and Pedestrian Safety Survey asks about walking and biking routes, traffic near schools, kiss and ride experiences, accessibility, and other safety concerns.
Your feedback will help FCPS identify common issues. Your responses will be kept confidential and shared with school administrators and the Office of Safety and Security. The five-minute survey is open through Thursday, October 15.
Be sure to identify the school related to your feedback and include specific locations where you have observed a safety issue. If you have students at different schools in FCPS, please complete a different survey for each school.
If you have any questions about the survey, please contact SafeRoutestoSchool@fcps.edu.

Help your child prepare for future success by encouraging them to develop positive attendance habits. Regular attendance supports learning and helps students stay on track for college, careers, and other opportunities after graduation.
Take a look at the FCPS calendar. Try your best to schedule any vacations or planned family events on weekends and school holidays. If the appointment needs to be during the school day, when possible, schedule it for the beginning or end of the day to minimize time missed.
If your child needs to miss school because of an illness or appointment, please report the absence to our school as early as possible. Find out how to report an absence on our homepage or call the front office.
If you or your family need any kind of support, please let us know. We are here for you! Visit the FCPS Attendance webpage for tips and strategies.

The free Lightspeed Parent Portal makes it easy for you to see and manage how your child uses their FCPS-issued device outside of school hours. New Lightspeed Parent Portal features for this school year include:
-
Schedules: Pause or restrict internet access during specific times, such as during homework time, family dinners, weekends, or bedtime.
-
Web Rules: Block specific websites you don’t want your child accessing at home.
Be sure to check your email (subject line: “Filter Portal Weekly Report”) each Sunday for the Lightspeed Student Online Activity Report, a weekly summary of the websites your child has visited. Learn more about Lightspeed Parent Reports.
The NSES PTA is a fantastic way to get involved and connect with other Beaver families! We encourage you to join the PTA and attend meetings throughout the year. We also have a variety of volunteer opportunities available, so please reach out to nsespta@gmail.com and let them know if you're able to share your time and talents! The PTA coordinates community events as well as fundraising to support some of our most popular projects and initiatives!
