Where All Students Shine!

Students and families participating in Kindergarten Family Morning Meeting

Dear Kings Park Families,

We appreciated the opportunity to build community with many of our Kindergarten families at last week’s Morning Meeting Event. We know students learn best when they feel connected to a caring community of classmates, families, and staff.

Partnering with you to keep our school community safe and thriving is always our top priority. Everyday attendance plays a vital role in your child’s confidence and success, and seeing our students arrive on time each morning ready to learn makes all the difference! To help keep arrival and dismissal smooth and safe for all our Lions, here are a few reminders:

  • Our school day begins promptly at 8:40am. Students arriving with parents/guardians after 8:40am must enter door 1 and be signed in at the office. Dismissal begins at 3:20pm.
  • To help keep everyone safe, students on wheels are asked to walk their bike/scooter on school property during arrival and dismissal.
  • All are welcome to gather by the bike racks tomorrow at 8:20am as we celebrate Walk, Bike, & Roll to School Day.

Thank you for your ongoing support and dedication to making Kings Park such a wonderful place to learn and grow.

Mrs. Kaplan, Mrs. Lin, and Mrs. Burke standing outside.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Dotty Lin, Mrs. Jenn Burke and Mrs. Anna Kaplan

Walk, Bike, Roll

Walk, Bike, & Roll to School Day TOMORROW - Wednesday, October 7th

Walk, Bike, & Roll to School Day is TOMORROW - October 7th! Walking and biking to school benefits both the students and the community in several ways. Students who walk and bike get more physical activity, have more time to socialize with their friends, and develop a sense of independence and self-reliance. The community benefits from reduced pollution and traffic congestion. We encourage participants to plan a safe route in advance. A fun way to celebrate this day is to form a “walking train” with other Kings Park friends! Meet at the bike racks (to the left of the main entrance) at 8:20am to celebrate! Kiss and Ride, in addition to bus transportation, will still be available and will follow the same route schedules.

📚 Halfway Through Learning About Life Science in Language Arts 📚

We are halfway through Benchmark Unit 1 in Language Arts! Across grade levels, students have explored where plants and animals live and how they grow and change.

Connect with your child’s learning at school with these fun questions and hands-on activities at home:

  • Question: What has been your favorite reading in this unit so far and why?
  • Activity: Have your child imagine they are an animal and write or dictate a short story about their day.

At the end of the unit, your child will take their unit magazine home. The magazine includes an activity calendar with fun ways to help students build on what they’re learning at each grade level. You can also find information on how to support your child’s reading at home on the Benchmark Families website.

Calendar Change: Eid al-Fitr

FCPS will mark the beginning of Eid al-Fitr with an evening-only observance day on Monday, March 8. There will be school on this day, but major school-sponsored events and activities (such as auditions or tryouts) will not take place.

Tuesday, March 9, will be a holiday for students and staff.

Wednesday, March 10, will be an observance day. There will be school on this day, but certain activities that cannot be made up (major tests, field trips, or mandatory events) will not take place.

A new school year calendar has been published, which includes this change. Please note that holidays and observances on the calendar may shift due to anticipated lunar sightings.

Safe Routes to School Parent and Caregiver Survey

As part of the Fairfax County School Board’s Annual School-Based Traffic and Pedestrian Safety Assessment, the FCPS Office of Safety and Security and Safe Routes to School program are inviting parents and caregivers to share their experiences traveling to and from school.

The Traffic and Pedestrian Safety Survey asks about walking and biking routes, traffic near schools, kiss and ride experiences, accessibility, and other safety concerns.

Your feedback will help FCPS identify common issues. Your responses will be kept confidential and shared with school administrators and the Office of Safety and Security. The five-minute survey is open through Thursday, October 15.

Be sure to identify the school related to your feedback and include specific locations where you have observed a safety issue. If you have students at different schools in FCPS, please complete a different survey for each school.

If you have any questions about the survey, please contact SafeRoutestoSchool@fcps.edu.

FCPS Seeks Community Input on Middle School AAP Centers

FCPS is exploring a plan to offer Full-Time Advanced Academic Program (AAP) services at every middle school. Under the proposal, students who qualify could attend their neighborhood middle school and take advanced classes with other AAP students. The School Board has approved community engagement at Franklin, Hayfield, Holmes, Key, and Whitman middle schools, where programs could open for the 2027-28 school year. The proposal is still under consideration, and the School Board is expected to make a decision in December.

Each community meeting offers in-person and virtual participation. Upcoming meetings are scheduled for:

  • Holmes Middle: Thursday, October 15, at 6 p.m.
  • Whitman Middle: Thursday, October 22, at 6 p.m.

Current middle school students will remain at their assigned AAP centers through middle school. Learn more and find meeting sign-up forms on the Middle School AAP Centers page.
